A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

The lesser of two evils argument is platonic. So it's older than Jesus and at the same time no one has come up with anything better.
So to me people who abstain from voting are objectively wrong.
That is objectively wrong. It assumes that every election is independent - which they are not. The 'lesser evil' is to lock democrats out of power until they run non-genocidal candidates. The short term sucks, but in the long term it is much much better.
Do you mean by the short term sucks that
To me, you're saying an insane comment. This isn't just a matter of sucking a little, people are dying, being tortured and are broke.
Yes - there is a cost to adopting genocide as the democratic platform. If only Harris and Biden had valued the list of things you list more than committing crimes against humanity we would not be in this situation.
Well most of the voters in Michigan who abstained were from middle eastern and Muslim backgrounds so as far as they're concerned what Trump did to America is what America has either been financing or outright doing themselves to both groups for decades. It makes more sense to try and sway the man who claims to have a conscience than Trump
I hold zero ill will towards them obstaining. As far as im concerned most Americans would have gladly sacrificed Palestinians and Muslims for their own comfort. Historically white America has done it to every other race. Let be honest, its only problematic now because its happening in the US and not one of those icky brown countries
Yeah there's no ~~effective~~ agreeable way to protest a party you're mostly aligned with in a two party state. They use your and their mutual "enemy" to hold your vote hostage.
You vote in primaries at minimum. Even better, get involved with your local Democratic party group to push for and advocate for what you seek... or run for something yourself.
The "party" isn't some homogeneous thing, it's just a lot of loosely aligned folks trying to move in generally the same direction.
Check and check. I also wish "party" wasn't such a thing in representative democracy. Like even within the most progressive leftist parties the candidates very wildly
Yes - the democrats rely on the argument that since they are fractionally to the left of the republicans you have no where to go.
Do you have historical examples of your strategy being viable? Because to me what's going to change things is public perception.
And once it does the same people for genocide will suddenly be against genocide. I can think of countless examples in American history. Like gay marriage.
History shows us that no regime has just 'decided' to give up on genocide once it has a taste for it. The democrats were never going to stop on their own - they had to be stopped - like every other genocidal regime. Locking them out of power until they renounce genocide is the only historically viable approach.
You have it backwards. If the republicans had no chance of winning, then there can be a split within the Democrats.
Absolute bullshit if you think the Republicans winning is “lesser of two evils” in any sane universe.
It's absolutely the lesser of two evils. If the democrats had won we would have no chance of a non-genocidal candidate in 2028. Right now we have that possibility.
Sure, yeah. It's a lesser evil to vote in a madman that kills countless people around the world, built literal concentration camps, threatens all of your allies, dismantles your intelligence networks, steals/defrauds billions out of the American people, and absolutely destroys your country's foundations for generations to come. How silly of the rest of the world. We should have understood that it's a lesser evil to vote in a man that randomly blows up boats of civilians, while funnelling the stolen wealth of his comrades in efforts to dismantle the democracies and destroy the economies of your greatest allies in order to subjugate them.
SMH, some Americans are so bizarre and self-centered. There's many of y'all that have brains, but people like you are no different than MAGA.
Stopping genocide has a cost. A cost that the democrats imposed on us by being more willing to let Trump win than renounce crimes against humanity. Let's hope they have learned their lesson.
Uh huh, sure. I honestly don't believe you at this point because what you're saying is so evil and moronic that it legitimately does not even make sense. You're destroying the world and supporting the murder of countless more people in order to ... provide greater support for the exact genocide you claim you dislike? Sure buddy.
Pick up your red hat and stop larping on the internet. You'll be kept warm in hell.
It's easy to play games with other people's lives.
I'm sure that is what Harris and Biden are wrestling with. If only they had valued those lives when they had the chance to save them.
America has been doing that since its birth lol
