My friend's kid is hooked on Ponyo right now, and I feel like that will be the Miyazaki film burned into her soul from here on forward.

I can never pick just one for these things. I'll really try to limit though.

Lilo and Stitch. It's just a perfect story, great style, and just an all around good time. Who didn't love something cute and fluffy?

Adventure Time. Great adventure, basically a show that animated what my imagination felt like as a kid. I'll get to play a DnD game set in Ooo one day (actually want to use Wyrmwood Wand but that'll be even less likely).

Angels Egg or Neon Genesis Evangelion. I basically marathoned them back to back in college. Everyone needs to watch something that leaves them going "wtf" at least once in their life.

Cool, never heard of angel's egg, thanks.

Adventure time was my favorite pretty much the whole time it was running. Phenomenal show.

I hadn't seen Angel's Egg, that was greeeat, I want to get the soundtrack.

I'm open to any other recommendations you may have, thanks.

Really just the classics. In no particular order here's my list of weird animated movies.

  • Heavy Metal (also Fritz the Cat for more adult animated film)
  • Paprika
  • King of Thorn (for some reason this one is never highly rated. I really liked it but haven't revisited it since college)
  • Fantastic Planet (probably closest in vibe to Angels Egg)
  • 9
  • Wizards
  • Night on the Galactic Railroad (not actually seen myself but the guy who introduced me to Angels Egg recommended it. Gay cats on a train or something)
  • Son of the white mare (also not seen myself, just told it's weird and grand and good)
  • Gandahar (Isaac Asimov actually helped with the English translation. I also have not seen. I really need more time to catch up on my to watch list)
