The line claiming the word is Huron is a direct quote from the National Museum of Great Lakes page that I hyperlinked. You got a problem with it then write them a letter.

I also posted a link to a Government of Canada page that says it came from an Iroquois word if that helps. I didn't specifically quote that though because I didn't want to confuse people. Ontarí’io "looks" more like Ontario than kanadario so I went with that for simplicity. History is messy and I didn't want to spend too much time trying to find which claim was more correct. Both the Huron and Iroquois words seem to exist and they are probably related, but I am not Huron, Iroquois, a linguist, or a historian. I just tried to do right and share both for anyone who's curious. Anyone who isn't curious would hopefully at least come away with "Ontario comes from an indigenous word", and that's a win in my book.

Try not to let my P.P.S. fun fact get you so worked up. I'm sharing here, not trying to "talk smack". Being a butt-hurt reactionary does not win us any non-indigenous friends. Phrases like "I know my people better than you" come off as needlessly aggressive and I personally try not to do stuff like that (except for that one time my neighbourhood got a cree/nehiyawewin name and I got into fights with people who thought it was too hard to pronounce). If you have better info then I think the best path is to share so people can learn.
