HTML is not valid markdown. Expecting other clients to break standards because one did is not backwards compatibility
I'm quite ignorant on this all, so correct me if i say errors, but isn't Markdown a text-to-HTML syntax ?
That's what i get from the Wikipedia page, and from both specifications it mentions :

This is some random website, not the standard. And even then, it explicitly says "Many Markdown applications allow you to use HTML", not Markdown itself. The section on images does not mention img tags. A couple lines down:
