In Australia, at least where I am, we're still civilised and they let you fill up and then pay. There's cameras to catch the plates of people that drive off without paying, though.
Everyone is used to what they normally use, though I'm originally from Europe, living in US for most of my life and while visiting my country recently I used a car rental. I think having card reader on the gas distributor is better.
I noticed two issues. Once is that people almost always left their car next to the distributor when going to pay, so I had to wait until they were done, then when I went to pay I had to wait in line, because nearly everyone also was purchasing additional items from the store (I guess this approach has plus for the owner as they can make much more from the convenience store).
With the card reader on the distributor the whole process was much shorter and I was on my way as soon as the fueling finished.
