I don't have Twitter so I can't confirm, but it looks like the mob had determined this was an AI fake. The one time I was considering using xcancel, it's already gone lol

As a Japanese guy, I can attest that the Japanese is unnatural and a quick search does show that the pricing is wrong. Also Saikachi would be an incredibly rare last name (all different ways of writing the kanji ads up to about 1'000 individuals in all of Japan), so it shouldn't be difficult to find her in a quick online search but you can't find anything about her.

Also hawt, but VMU is weird.

[-] BilSabab@lemmy.world 23 points 22 hours ago

fucking hell! its getting harder and harder to find some legit shit!

[-] k0e3@lemmy.ca 7 points 19 hours ago

Right? Why do they even make fake ones like these? It messes with history. I mean, this particular example might not be a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but if there were thousands of these made and a history in the future wanted to make a documentation about 90s gaming advertisements, they'd have to sift through a bunch of fakes.

back in the day forging some historical material used to be a research exercise for history students. we had that kind of thing for the press and we had to study how things are written (that was the whole point) and then replicate it using these insights - barely anyone ever got a good grade for these things because it is way harder to do than it seems like - even something from 10 years ago linguistically is another world and something form 1920s or 1930s (or earlier) is straight up parallel universe.

Would be nice if you changed the title to reflect the forgery.

That does not look like AI to me... maybe

[-] k0e3@lemmy.ca 12 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

It's really well made, but I can point out a few weird things.

  • Weird black thing under 圧倒的, not a Japanese character
  • Weird black thing between S and E of the big SEGA
  • There's a belt buckle but not really a belt on her pants
  • The words Power, and Access on the console are illegible but clearly don't have the proper number of letters
  • The Japanese copy is weird: why underline "controlpad" "in-game world" "control as you"; ます ending out of nowhere; lots of commas; miswrote Nights and Evangelion
  • Awkwardly separates Sega and Saturn in the logo just to show... her belt buckle?
  • Price is wrong
  • Japan didn't require adding "+ tax" or "excl tax" until 2004.

Maybe my memory is a bit shit. But the main give away for me is that the image quality of the model seems way too high for Sega Saturn era, i.e. Early to mid 90s

Professional photography was potentially done on film negatives larger than paper on which consumers printed their photos. So I'm not sure in what way “image quality is too high”.

Yeah I can see some more AI signs now

[-] k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 points 16 hours ago

Sry, I pressed shift + enter by accident and commented too early. There are some signs I saw above!
