a p2p network and program. Like bittorrent but with the search included in the program.

There's also upload credits like BT, but it rewards long time users so it's less forgiving than bt, which then new users find disappointing because they don't reach high speeds as fast or easily (at least in the begining). This also causes a lack of new users, which will then make it hard to reach high speeds - making it a doom loop: low speeds -> no new users -> low speeds.

However it still has a dedicated community.

However it has an advantage, which is the easiness of sharing, which makes it good for find hard stuff to find.

For linux use amule (https://github.com/amule-org/amule/releases), and in windows use emule ai (https://github.com/eMuleAI/eMuleAI/releases )

Hah! I’m just learning this now. I remember on the early 2000s I once started several dozen large downloads right before going on vacation with my parents. Came back 4 weeks later and they were finally done. I thought it was because of our slow internet but it must have been because of my lack of upload credits.

probably a mix of both.

From perplexity because i'm lazy:

The core difference is that eMule uses a persistent, pairwise “credit” score that carries over across files and sessions, while BitTorrent uses a short‑term, per‑swarm “tit‑for‑tat” mechanism with no lasting credit between peers

EDIT: Also emule has a block size of 9Mib while bt has a 512kb which at the time (let's say 2005) was too ambitious for the speeds the users had at home. The 9MiB block is now ok :-)
