I grew up in the 90s and absolute adored my N64. OoT was my jam. Still my favourite Zelda game, though some others have come close.

Saying any N64 game except maybe Super Mario 64 has aged "great" is... a take, certainly. There's some very strongly rose-tinted nostalgia glasses on a lot of people, I think. And I'm not even just talking about the graphics. The polygons of the N64 era will always have a certain charm, for me. But my gods, but controls and the QoL features in general were not quite there yet in that era.

Goldeneye is another game that I think people mostly remember so fondly because of how they felt when they played it back then. Try playing it again today, after experiencing modern FPS QoL improvements, and uh... it's not great.

Revolutionary, cutting-edge games for their time, but they have not aged well imho.

Agreed. I can deal with low-poly graphics. It's the janky controls and QoL factors that cause games to age poorly for me.

To your point, I recently played a round of Goldeneye with some friends on an N64 with original controllers and everything. My god. It was atrocious. I couldn't believe we'd spent countless hours playing it back in the day.

I feel like N64 games have aged well in the same way that NES games have aged well. They're both primative and compromised, and you either like the effect that has or you don't. I think most people would agree that blurry textures and low resolutions are pretty ugly for 3D and I see why, but the low detail looks uncluttered and easy to parse, and everything being so angular is a fun exaggeration which I like as its own style. I guess I have a pet hate for people talking like it's not valid as an art style, and I feel like that may have been how NES games were treated in the years after its obsolesence, now 8 bit pixel art is just funky and cool, and has been for decades.

I've been playing DK64 again with the new PC recomp, and now I can play it at 60FPS I have been appreciating the texture work, seeing it at stable framerates it looks so much prettier, a lot of the environments and some enemies have baked in lighting in the textures and while it's still low poly some stuff feels closer to PS2 vibes than N64, I'd say they took the visuals to a much higher level than any other retail N64 game I've seen

I think graphics are less of a factor in how games age than the controls are. I had a friend recently ask me what Zelda game he should play for his first one. I recommended Ocarina of Time. He couldn't get past two dungeons. I said yeah the graphics are a little dated. He said I don't care about graphics but the controls are awful.

So my next recommendation for him was Link to the Past for a more classic Zelda experience, or Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom for a more modern and polished open world that doesn't follow the classic formula.

Interesting! Yeah the early 3d era had very unforgiving controls all things considered, usually as a result of camera systems not reaching maturity. You sorta have to plan your movement around what it's good at and lots of newer age gamers aren't keen on what can feel like a big step backwards. They might like SOH better though! Much more customisable controls and camera
