Nintendo Store link

Release date is Nov 5 2026. I believe the physical release is an actual physical release and not a game key card.

For anyone lamenting they don't have a Switch 2, or looking for OoT with QoL improvements for cheaper than whatever Nintendo's asking price is, there is a free PC port of OoT that will run as fast as your hardware can handle it without messing up gameplay speed etc, has a ton of switchable QoL features, and has mod support for using 3DS (and better) graphics/models. You can even use Master Quest's edited dungeons with all the benefits of the 3DS version.

It's called Ship of Harkinian. All you have to do is provide a copy of the game ROM.

Never played the orig (never had a console after the Atari 2600), but as much as I've hears of the zelda-games, it's probably worth a shot?

A pirated ROM will probably do fine too? Before even thinking of giving nintendo a single Buck.

Thanks either way!

I think so, I think Ocarina of Time earns its high esteem, and Ship of Harkinian irons out a lot of the QoL issues that make the original annoying, like being able to toggle boots without going into the menu.

After you finish OoT I'd recommend running Majora's Mask via 2 Ship 2 Harkinian as well. It's less popular than OoT but every bit as good, I think. I can't pick just one, but if I had to pick a "#1 favorite video game of all time", Majora's Mask would be a finalist. It's really good.

Looks like it’s going to be very close to the original, at least judging by the scenes they chose for the trailer. The camera and scenarios look 1:1 identical to OOT. I like that!

Hope they introduce some bonus content or an Easter egg, but I do think that being faithful to the original is a the right choice.

A Nintendo game and a remake, Lemmy should love this! /s

[-] ieightpi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

So far it looks like the reception isn't too bad here actually

[-] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

the amount of overly detailed shitting on it is something else. so many bitter weirdos just trying to find some absurd detail to hate on because... they have nothing better to do and no idea what non-bitter gaming people care about?

it will sell 20 million+

I'm honestly surprised how I haven't seen people ranting yet about how Nintendo is fascist and run by neo-nazis and this remake is proof of that.

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

wah wah people don't like things that i like, how dare they upset me with contrary opinions wah wah wah.

[-] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 3 points 3 days ago

You forget to add "zionists"

I won't be buying it cause I don't have a switch 2, but emulation shouldn't too far away.

Nintendo finally hired that guy!

Jokes aside, looks pretty good. The faces are throwing me off a lot though. They're so... weird. I was expecting something closer to breath of the wild than the semi-realistic style. I hope they adjust kid link, at least.

[-] emb@lemmy.world 20 points 4 days ago

I thought the faces looked good, except young Zelda looked a little weird to me.

[-] popcar2@piefed.ca 13 points 4 days ago

Looking closer I think all the child characters look really uncanny. They're all so stubby with huge eyes and it's just weird. Adult link and Ganon look great though.

The Nintendo discourse cycle:

  1. Months of furious, irrational debate
  2. Releases to record sales
  3. 1 year later, no lasting cultural impact and most people agree that you should probably just play the original for the historical context (maybe the 3DS remaster, more debate ensues)
[-] victorz@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I prefer their remakes, not gonna lie. Improvements to gameplay QoL here and there, good looking graphics, better frame rates(!).

And I grew up with NES and N64. I know what it was like. The slow frame rate is a big source of frustration for me, personally. But upgraded visuals are a big plus to me also.

[-] MimicJar@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

I think most people would agree with you, the remakes have QoL improvements that basically make them the best version.

Sure some people will always be nostalgic for the originals, but as remakes continue what is the original?

Let's look at Link's Awakening. If you played it on the Game Boy, it's a great game. But if you played it on the Game Boy Color it had the camera side quest and color dungeon, those were excellent. But if you played it on the Switch the camera side quest is now Dampe's Dungeon Creator.

I personally liked the camera side quest, but Dampe's Dungeon Creator was an interesting addition and I think it was cool to see.

[-] victorz@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Fully agree. Also the upgraded MUSIC with orchestral versions of all the classic songs. Ugh. So good. 😭🤤

If I can still parry Ganon with a bottle, I’ll be content.

[-] owenfromcanada@lemmy.ca 14 points 4 days ago

Sheik has a long braid? Are they just giving up on the disguise thing?

[-] sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz 9 points 4 days ago

Wow I really got gaslit by Hyrule Warriors and Smash Bros Sheik, because I thought the braid was always there lol.

[-] lemmelemmy@feddit.org 7 points 3 days ago

I don’t like realistic looking Zelda games. There’s enough call of duties on the market already

[-] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

This is officially the first Switch 2 release I am sad because I don't have a Switch 2 and won't be able to anytime soon... at least this fall is stacked with a ton of other great releases. Hopefully next year ill be able to get one.

Not enough polygons.

[-] myyass@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

I still get sad about Saria. She's the best character in the game.

I know this game inside and out so I'm afraid I won't really enjoy it. Looks a little weird.

[-] cattywampas@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Looks awesome! Can't wait to relive my childhood. I love Ocarina of Time so much, but it hasn't aged well like pretty much every N64 game. Really looking forward to playing it again with modern quality of life.

[-] M137@lemmy.today 6 points 3 days ago

I don't see that at all, they've aged great IMO. And that seems to be the opinion of most people as they're still loved and played so much.

[-] iamthetot@piefed.ca 7 points 3 days ago

I grew up in the 90s and absolute adored my N64. OoT was my jam. Still my favourite Zelda game, though some others have come close.

Saying any N64 game except maybe Super Mario 64 has aged "great" is... a take, certainly. There's some very strongly rose-tinted nostalgia glasses on a lot of people, I think. And I'm not even just talking about the graphics. The polygons of the N64 era will always have a certain charm, for me. But my gods, but controls and the QoL features in general were not quite there yet in that era.

Goldeneye is another game that I think people mostly remember so fondly because of how they felt when they played it back then. Try playing it again today, after experiencing modern FPS QoL improvements, and uh... it's not great.

Revolutionary, cutting-edge games for their time, but they have not aged well imho.

[-] cattywampas@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Agreed. I can deal with low-poly graphics. It's the janky controls and QoL factors that cause games to age poorly for me.

To your point, I recently played a round of Goldeneye with some friends on an N64 with original controllers and everything. My god. It was atrocious. I couldn't believe we'd spent countless hours playing it back in the day.

Uncanny valley where nobody wants this, identityless UE5 visual style, but it's a box check to sell more copies.. aka, soulless, greedy slop.

It looks like it's gonna be bad.

If it's unlikely to be better than the original, the only reason for it to exist is to make money.

Also what in garbage name is that awful voice acting? If there's better voice acting in WWF, your voice acting sucks piss.

I just want the people making games to care about us again and stop making things that are clearly, so blatantly, insultingly soulless garbage just to extract money from us and play on the weak minded who are slaves to their nostalgia and have no self control.

Stop giving people that make shit like this money.

Hard pass.

I like that you can control the camera with the right stick. But that's about it.

Fortunately Ship of Harkinian has that and more.
