I wasn't sure what to expect when Appy finally released their first folding phone, but naming it after the Microsoft Surface Duo folding phone was not on my list at all.
The naming scheme fits with the Magsafe Duo Charger.
Okay?
The Surface duo was released a month prior to the chargers announcement. The charger gets its name from the fact that it can charge 2 devices, which is a fundamentally different gimmick than the naming scheme of this phone. The charger also exists in a different product category than either phone.
The fact remains there are now 2 companies who have released specifically folding phones named duo in a relatively recent time frame. There are other phones with the duo monicker hinting at things like dual cameras or sim cards, but at the end of the day, I was expecting Apple to hold true to their persona of being unique and special in having to rename even the most basic things that I was surprised they settled on exactly the same name one of their competitors had used for the same product category.
The existence of other things named duo doesn't invalidate that there are now 2 folding phones named the same thing from different companies.
The Powerbook Duo predates Microsoft surface by about 30 years.
Though exists in a completely different product category.
Apple likes to recycle their brand names. AppleVision was a display long before it was used s the headset branding. I’ll be interested to see if the Apple folding phone is a flop. I would much rather have seen the Duo name saved for something more innovative. 🤷♂️
It’s a shame that Microsoft gave up on Windows phone. It was a good product around version 7 and 8. Slapping android on a device and giving it Microsoft branding was just utterly embarrassing though. Still, I expect nothing less from their current lack of vision or leadership.
