I had a customer drop off their PC for service and they had the "all-in" setup- everything in Windows signed in, opted in to everything imaginable, including the phone link app.

While I worked on their PC I got copies of every phone notification, as well as the ability to act on those notifications. I saw every SMS his wife sent him. Everything. Just pop-up notifications in my face. Very nearly hit the "activate alarm" button for their home security system multiple times.

If you use this, you are the absolute bottom of the barrel- the dumbest buffoon to have ever existed. If you use Window's "phone link" app, you should be absolutely ashamed of yourself.

That's like saying the customer gave me the password to their PC or phone, and then I had access to all their files and photos.

It's not though. It's worse than that- much worse. It's "Then I had access to the user documents, files, settings, SMS and text history. Wanna know if they prefer blondes or brunettes?" because that's exactly what it was.

The tech is supposed to be the expert. He/her should be guiding the customer so they don't expose themselves. This is not a 'dumb customer ' story. It's a 'incompetent tech' story for not asking the right questions or providing the right guidance. Former tech guy.

I disagree. Anyone willing to hand control of their entire life to an app, sacrifice telemetry 24/7 is an idiot regardless of education. Trying to fix people like this is a losing game.

When you give your device over to a tech support department, it is on them to tell the customer of potential security issues with the customers data. To me, it's no different then accessing a customer's glove box when you are servicing their car. If it doesn't pertain to the work order, it's none of your business.
