At the risk of being "that guy"...
Cash handouts are not socialism.
I realize what community this is, but... there is so much noise in this conversation, I think it's a bad idea for those of you who support actual socialism (or socialist ideas) to add to the noise by stooping to the colloquial misunderstanding.
A cash payout from a capitalist republic government like the US is at most a tax rebate.
Well yeah but it's a slippery slope from here. For now it's just a one-time handout and I agree that THAT isn't socialism. But what happens in 2 years when Trump doesn't just need to win the midterms but the full-fledged election? Is he gonna promise UBI? Healthcare for all? Who knows what other crazy socialist ideas that man has floating in his brain.
What is actually socialism is the Trump administration taking a share of Intel stock. Funny how state-owned industry is just "good business" but funding public transit and healthcare is "evil socialism".
It's blatant corruption and illegal in all functioning democracies. Not saying you don't have a point, but your point I believe is incomplete without this as a disclaimer.
A tax rebate in itself isn't necessarily illegal, but yes in this context offering it as a bribe to influence voting is illegal.
