I haven't seen the movie yet but the cyclops losing its eye was definitely in the poem and kinda important to the plot.

If you actually want to read it at some point, try Emily Wilson's translation, it's said to be one of, if not the most readable version because it doesn't force fake olden English on you and uses a rhythm scheme that reads better in the English language. And she's now translated Iliad too.
