You know, I bought the collection from GOG when they had 2000, 3, and 4 in a bundle...
I haven;t played since 2k on DOS, and should probably try the newer ones.
I was a fan of MAXIS, but pretty much wrote the series off after EA got involved.
They're definitely worth giving a shot, though I hear they have a different feel to the earlier games (one that isn't entirely just due to the graphical jump). 4 was where I started and I found it immediately intoxicating, though it definitely took me awhile to get the hang of it.
