I switched over to Linux Mint a few days ago. While the game doesn't work 'out of the box', it doesn't take too much to get working. And boy does it work - it's loading up quicker than on Windows and seems to be more responsive while on a map too.

I only had one CTD, which was while testing one of the newer mods but I wasn't able to recreate it afterwards. I'll call that a significant win.

I had only really ever played Sim City 2000 and 3000 but man the art on that screenshot looks like absolute peak of pixel art on old PC games. Like I don't know how you could get more detailed while retaining that aesthetic.

I'd argue that SC4 is still the best city builder, even better than Cities Skylines 1 (definitely better than the bullshit sundae that is Cities Skylines 2).

Congrats on getting it working on linux, I've never gotten that far with it personally..

How did you manage?

God what I wouldnt give for a remaster of SC4, just enough work to get it working on modern OS without issue, maybe change the engine to 64bit if at all feasible for more ram awareness.

As someone who's spent a lot of time on Cities Skyline 2 recently, I'd argue it's gotten a lot better. They have new devs that are actively working on fixing the game and I've had almost no bugs compared to 2 or 3 years ago. Would recommend giving it another chance

In what areas has it improved the most, in your opinion? I played a lot of CS1 but have not yet touched CS2 because of *guestures broadly at everything*.

[-] TheKaul@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 6 hours ago

I mean if you're wanting features, go for the first with DLC (2nd one includes some of the 1sts DLC in base game but does leave some stuff out...) But I enjoy the road building more than the first, and the tax system makes the city feel more in your control (in regards to what businesses you want running). I also personally like the interface more and the overall simulation of pops seems improved from the 1st.

Most of the issues I had at release were weird bugs with certain commercial sectors not making any money, and homeless people crowding the streets, but my last playthrough which went up to Milestone 20, I had no bugs or issues that made me annoyed with the game.

The latest dev blogs actually make it sound like they're doing something, so the hype of that could be affecting my opinion a bit.

Which is bullshit in and of itself, because it should have never been released in that state, and I shouldn't have to wait years for the game I bought to actually be playable, because someone got greedy/stupid and Cyberpunked it by kicking it out hte door years before it should have had a public eye on it.

Have fun with it. Though I would think that something like Lutris could run it.

I strongly recommend the Network Addon Mod to fix some limitations (or rather bugs) due to then too weak hardware.

I can't imagine life without NAM. That being said it's such a big mod that it's often overwhelming for new players. There is NAM lite for memory which gives you the fixes without having a new player drown in a multitude of new features and puzzle pieces.

[-] Peasley@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

i've been playing with NAM a few years (also on Linux 🙂) and there are still lots of features i haven't touched

Welcome to the family ,enjoy you're stay on Linux mint. Was my first distro in 2012

It's a nice entry point into the Linux world so far. There were a few hiccups in the transition, but they actually help with the learning process.

Who's the statue of in the park?

[-] EastChapelSyndicate@lemmy.world 1 points 48 minutes ago

It's actually just the vanilla rewards statue. I have my own in game lore for it though.

SimCity 4 is my favorite one of the series 😭

[-] crimson_iris@piefed.social 11 points 11 hours ago

Same here. It has just the right balance between retro and modern graphics, and the soundtrack is excellent as well.

Great game dynamics, but so unstable

[-] EastChapelSyndicate@lemmy.world 7 points 12 hours ago

It was stable on Windows - crashes were very rare once you had the 4GB patch installed, but I'll have to get back to you after a few hours with Linux. Theres been a few new mods that really challenge what the game can do, and one of those caused a crash with my testing, but it seems that was a once off so far.

[-] Peasley@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

it was way more crashy for me back in the day vs now, maybe that's what they mean

[-] EastChapelSyndicate@lemmy.world 1 points 52 minutes ago

That makes sense. Modern patches and updates (and likely hardware) fixed a lot of the initial issues. I definitely had some crashes before I started modding the game in earnest too.

You know, I bought the collection from GOG when they had 2000, 3, and 4 in a bundle...

I haven;t played since 2k on DOS, and should probably try the newer ones.

I was a fan of MAXIS, but pretty much wrote the series off after EA got involved.

[-] EastChapelSyndicate@lemmy.world 7 points 12 hours ago

They're definitely worth giving a shot, though I hear they have a different feel to the earlier games (one that isn't entirely just due to the graphical jump). 4 was where I started and I found it immediately intoxicating, though it definitely took me awhile to get the hang of it.
