Ok, so the black pawn in f moves forward to prevent mate, but then white could use their move to enpassant moving their pawn in e to f, in the position behind where black’s pawn is in the picture, which is check again and possibly mate?
Yup, that's why the eyes are wide. It's a checkmate on an en passant.
