Oh yea! I see it!

G5xf6 Kh6 Rxh8 Bxh8 F7 Bg7 Bc6 Kg8 Be8

And from there, the black pawn is deadlocked and the black king or black bishop is also locked to the promoting pawn, so it’s just a series of white pawn and king moves to finally get the promotion.

Mate in 38!

Thank you, I too fell in love with this puzzle.

Now roleplay as a non-fn-anarchist-crackhead that doesn't assume gxf6 is a legal move..

Alright, let me give it another go for you:

Correct me if I'm wrong (Im just reading this in my head), but doesn't the pawn on f7 block the king going to g8? Also why is F7 capitalized?

I assume the idea was to start e5xf6...

Wait, I don’t know the rules of chess that well, I know you can’t make a move that would put yourself in check, but if you move a pawn that triggers en passant, wouldn’t that just be an invalid move because technically you are putting yourself in check?

[-] albbi@piefed.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

The move by black was the only thing preventing checkmate before. Black was in check and the pawn move triggering en passant blocked it. And white could always blunder and take with the bishop. A move that results in the other player having the ability to check you isn't illegal.

Maybe you're thinking that en passant is a forced move by white. It's not forced, it's just only available as a legal move the turn after the pawn move. For example, the black pawn moves like in the picture. You can't make another move, then black moves and then take the pawn with en passant.

[-] SmoothLiquidation@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Ok, so the black pawn in f moves forward to prevent mate, but then white could use their move to enpassant moving their pawn in e to f, in the position behind where black’s pawn is in the picture, which is check again and possibly mate?

[-] albbi@piefed.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yup, that's why the eyes are wide. It's a checkmate on an en passant.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

TIL about en passant.

[-] Randelung@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

It's not a trigger, it's just legal now. Nobody forces us to make that move.

[-] negativenull@piefed.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

En Passamate

[-] crazycraw@crazypeople.online 9 points 2 weeks ago

I'd yell out en passant to the pitch and volume of Leroy Jenkins.

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I can hear it.

55% you say?

That pawn is guarding your king, don't be a fool!

He made up his mind 10 minutes ago.

[-] 0ops@piefed.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

I'm out of the loop, what team are we rooting for here?

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

The yellow squares indicate that black just moved that pawn, so it's white's turn, and there's a really cool mate-in-one available.

[-] mysticalone@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

so we are team green?

[-] Jackcooper@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I wanna know how we got to this position with white having that hanging rook that clearly the bishop was not defending

[-] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Black was in check the turn before so had to protect the King

The black bishop could've been in the back row the turn before, revealing the attack on the white rook but white countered with check

[-] jxk@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Moves from the position in reverse order:

f7-f5

Bd3-e4

Bf8-g7

Plausible enough

[-] Jackcooper@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

That bishop move makes sense. Thanks.

[-] haerrii@feddit.org 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Not sure if I understood everything correctly, could someone with more knowledge elaborate?

what I see:

  • black pawn hasn't moved yet, able to do 2 steps
  • black currently in check, pawn will resolve this.
  • any move white makes after, will make them lose at least bishop and rook?
  • then checkmate white?

EDIT: i think i forgot something on the way

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago

If white responds with en passant (using the e pawn) it's checkmate.

[-] Lupie@sopuli.xyz 8 points 2 weeks ago

I'm no chess player but I think the joke is white can checkmate black through en passant, which is exceptionally rare.

[-] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Kh6?

edit : me dumbass, only thought about taking with the e pawn and not the g pawn.

[-] zammy95@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Then RxH8+, but unless I'm missing something, king can still move to G5, right? So it's not mate (yet)

[-] SparroHawc@piefed.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Bishop will be covering that square, because en passant would open up the bishop's path.

h6 is a dark square, the white player's bishop is a light square bishop.

[-] SparroHawc@piefed.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Sorry, I was commenting about one step earlier - checkmate happens the moment en passant is played, because black's F pawn is gone and white's E pawn is now at F6, leaving the path open for the bishop.

[-] DScratch@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Doesn’t that put the king in check? So the king can’t move there.

[-] RunningTowardTheVoid@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

SparroHawc is correct. En passant captures the opposing pawn, opening bishop's path to G6.
