Was wondering the same, but I should really watch this stupid movie sometime.
Donkey is the fun and flexible one who comes in clutch when needed, Shrek has serious old-man-energy and is pretty stubborn and grumpy most of the time and just wants to be left alone but also does a lot of the heavy lifting. It actually kind of works. :) It's kind of why Canada and Europe work so well as a team too.
Shrek is obviously a meme but the trilogy is unironically great
