Laroche, who isn’t a student, began following the student around campus. The student reportedly noticed Laroche and went into a lobby bathroom to escape him.

While inside, Laroche allegedly trapped the student in a stall, demanded his phone number, and placed him in a headlock. Laroche then flicked the student’s face, ultimately breaking his glasses.

A lot of people are so brainwashed by rightwing bullshit they don't understand "triggering people" is insanely fucking dangerous...

The vast amount of people respond by running away or curling up in a ball when they're overstimulated, but a significant albeit small population get a real honest to God "fight" reflex.

And it is not what people think it is, it's not squaring up for a fight conciously and standing your ground. It's not making a bunch of noise to not be an easy target.

In a panic attack, the conscious mind shuts down and the propeciption system takes the wheel. Trigger the wrong person and before anyone knows what's happening, extreme violence has broken out, and that person is legitimately in a state where they're fighting for their life, even if it's just a "prank".

Once that happens, you might as well be saying "just a prank bro" to a brick wall you just drove into. Their "mark" would just become unresponsive with a blank face for a second or two which looks like what the bully wants, but when someone involuntarily loses the ability to feel emotions in those situations but hasn't literally curled up in a ball, that's probably the last step before violence.

Logic doesn't work anymore when someone is actually "triggered" which means violence or running away.

And people don't get to choose their fight or flight response, that shit is baked in.

There was that one prank video when three teens cornered a pizza delivery guy, so the pizza delivery pulled a gun and shot the lead prankster.

Got let off at trial, considered legitimate self defense.

My favorite is the mall video of two guys harassing a stranger and the stranger just blasts him and walks away.

I am autistic. I have been bullied for the whole time up until I was 18 and left my hometown.

Normally, I always curled up and cried when being bullied.

Except when I didn't. And I remember those times vividly. I remember clearly having to be pulled of my bullies by 3-4 people because I wasn't stopping and the bully was already on the floor bleeding. Every time this happened, my only thought was "it's you or them". And in those moments, you are never thinking about just stopping the aggression. You are thinking about eliminating the threat. I've always been lucky that every time this happened, there were people relatively close so they could stop me. Otherwise, I'd be telling very different stories.

Do NOT trigger people, you never know if they are going to feel threatened and, if the lizard brain takes control, it's gonna be a fight to death for them. You don't want to be involved in a fight in which the other person fears for their life.

For me it's more a gradual build up with distinct stages which I'm gonna list as stages for lack of a better way of explaining that irritation, trying to leave, cackling dumbfuck, calm, and beserker. Once I'm at that final stage Ive still got some rationality but it's almost all going towards being either a sadist or trying to acquire weapons, it has lead me to trying to steal at least one cops taser to specifically tase him in the nuts since I couldn't get out of my situation and figured that inflicting pain for my own amusement was the next best thing besides winning. Also I just don't feel pain in that state, in a different meltdown where I was at school I nearly crushed a different cop with one of those heavy ass metal bench tables with the rubberized coating, I was 8 I'm pretty sure I wrecked myself with that one since I slept for like 2 days straight after that meltdown.

How many run ins with the law have you had?

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 2 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

As an adult? None. As an abused child with severe trauma? Like 5 I think. Honestly my memory from that period is absolutely fucked, it's basically a bunch of flashes and what amounts to a list of things rather than any actually livable memory.

Basically every instance of me even getting close to going berserk since when I was around 14 has usually resulted in me just kinda fucking off, or otherwise resolving it in the calm stage. Turns out me being allowed to be alone is a great way for me to cool off. There was one instance when I was about 17 when someone punched me in the face so I hit him with a table, basically went berserk long enough to get him off me but didn't act like a sociopath since I was kinda too hungry to think at that point I was already acting like a zombie trying to get to Taco Bell for lunch.

Having had this happen once, yeah, this can be dangerous. I apparently shoved a guy half a foot taller than me through a glass door in high school. I don't remember a single thing about it.

My son was in a club making out with a girl when her rugby-player boyfriend (who he didn't know existed) went for him. He had Rugby Guy face down on the floor when the bouncers finally showed up. And I know that club. That's one filthy, nasty floor.

He later told the girl she really shouldn't do things like that. And about a year later, he hired Rugby Guy, who, despite his reactive impulsiveness on that occasion, is a decent guy. Much more decent now that he drinks a lot less. "Mongo only pawn in game of life."

shoved a guy half a foot taller than me through a glass door in high school.

Yeah, the problem is I'm already a huge dude...

I don’t remember a single thing about it.

Everytime it's happened to me, is burned into my memory. Slow motion replay, exactly what happened, and what could have happened if I wasn't trying to slam on the figurative brakes as hard as possible.

But I got PTSD on top of panic attacks.

I talked to a German military psychiatrist about it due to a very weird string of instances, and apparently it's relatively common over there. He described it as being "bear bait", and an evolutionary adaptation to how big of a problem bears were back in the day. But his English wasn't great, and my German is pretty shit, I'm sure there's a super long German name for it.

But if a whole tribe is backed into a cave, at least one idiot needs to go "fight" the bear and buy everyone else time to run. That's not just aggression, it involves turning off all self preservation and empathy, the only thing in your mind has to be "fuck that bear" and if any rational part of your brain was still online, you'd know you don't stand a chance against a bear. In modern society "the bear" is anything that can't be dealt with by any other means, when out of options the propeciption system steps up.

But the absolute worst part about it, is how everyone expects someone who's had their fight or flight reflex "triggered" to either curl up in a ball or run away. That's not the only options and people don't realize they're playing with their own lives. I'd bet the reason this guy went to a college campus, was he didn't want his targets to have a gun. And that should absolutely come up at trial.

[-] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

I'm not sure I buy that explanation, but it's more plausible than a lot of evolutionary explanations for behavior that I've heard.

[-] village604@adultswim.fan 15 points 1 day ago

It took 4 people to pull me off my bully when he made me see red. I don't remember anything after he started hitting me with a tree branch.

[-] Crostro@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

I feel you. Back when I was a police officer, after I was stabbed in the left eye socket with a broken beer bottle, I grabbed the 'suspect' by the neck and belt, used his head as a battering ram into the solid wood bar, causing temporary paralysis. Nerve compaction I'm told. Apparently I placed the cuffs on one of his arms and the barstool, but to be fair, I couldn't fucking see. Fight or flight is no joke. Never been to that level since but I do wear glasses now. Luckily both of us are okay long term although, one of us has a criminal record for assaulting a peace officer and one wears glasses. I should mention it was serving an arrest warrant for child abuse so I don't feel the least bit bad, but I shortly thereafter realized I couldn't do that job anymore because I was likely to kill someone. Cataloging child abuse does something to you.

Adrenaline can make your body do seemingly impossible shit. When that little lizard part of your brain decides that it's life or death it steps on the adrenaline gas pedal and nobody knows what will happen next. Look into hysterical strength and you will see a long list of people doing seemingly impossible stuff when hopped up on adrenaline.

[-] Jesus_666@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

One factor is that your brain absolutely doesn't care about long-term consequences when it believes it's fighting for your immediate survival (or that of someone sufficiently important to you like your child) so it completely ignores all the warning signs that normally keep you from overtaxing yourself. You need 100% performance right now, no matter if you end up tearing a muscle or breaking your own bones.

[-] Kirp123@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Yep. And it's makes sense. You may live with some torn muscles or some broken bones instead of just dying right now.

I've ran from every fight I could. Those that put me in a corner found out quickly that it was a mistake. The second I feel trapped I come out swinging.

[-] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago

I’ve ran from every fight I could.

That's always the best tactic, if you have the option.

I'm audhd and have the fight version. This situation would have ended poorly for the little cunt. Luckily I'm also 198cm/128kg so people tend to leave me alone.
