A use case I've seen (not AI actually, but old-school CGI when I was looking a few years ago) is for projects still in construction where you can reserve an apartment and buy when it's ready. The CGI images show the general shape of the place and illustrate what it might look like once furnished, with the very clear notice that the apartment will be turned over unfurnished and the photos are only there to give you an idea
3D renderings made from the construction BIM model are a totally different thing than probabilistic AI output that might or might not match reality.
CGI furniture is quite common and pretty acceptable as it's just a layer on top of the photo. Whatever software they use is really good about marching scale.
Personally I'm a fan of it. I lack the ability to look at an empty room and "see" a layout so it's kind of awesome to have a mock-up.....
...But I saw a listing the other day that took me a minute....a pool table taking up way too much room in the basement. Then I caught the small text on GAME ROOM sign. A ceiling tile grid that changes sizes. A hallway that turns into a nook between photos.
That's where I draw the line. The edits don't help me understand the layout or give me design ideas, it's simply false advertising.
The feature I keep seeing in AI images is the way no straight line in the image aligns to the same vanishing point. The edges of the table line up here, the countertops line up here, the fridge here. Its glaring and it would also make it hard to plan a room.
YES that's what I meant with the ceiling grid. I wasn't expecting AI at all (wasn't a thing last time I was browsing) so it took me a minute to figure out what felt so off about the size of the room. The back half looked way bigger as if the room was trapezoidal
And also when listings show furniture mockups, I'm used to it being right after the empty room photo. This listing ONLY had the AI photos, no original to reference.
