For anyone coming across this post:

'state-administered death' is an intentionally misleading. There is legitimate discussion happening about this issue and the surrounding nuances, but this post makes it harder to talk about those issues: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euthanasia_and_assisted_suicide_in_Canada
It compares all of Canada's MAID deaths in 2024 (16,499) to only firearm homicides in the US. If you include gun related suicides in the US (27,593 in 2024), the total number of gun related deaths in the US climbs to 44,447 (source). Meanwhile MAID deaths are generally those with serious medical conditions and are primarily those where the person had a reasonably foreseeable natural death. It takes time for approvals to happen, and the expansion to "grievous and irremediable condition[s]" happened in 2021. Mental illness is not currently included, and that is where a lot of the discussion is happening.

Your numbers aren't rates per population. Hence there may be some credibility.

The issue is that MAID has only recently become available. You should expect there to be a number of sufferors who would have used it sooner had it been available i.e. it isn't a steady state and shouldn't be compared to one.

That makes an interesting point. As I recall Canada as a whole had roughly the population of California about 40-50M? The USA has somewhere upwards of 300M total, so to be comparable Canada would have to be multiplied several times over.

Still, the fact that it's pre-planned with proper checks and approvals puts it in a whole separate class from murder and crisis desicion suicide in the USA where comparison is pretty pointless anyhow.

Thanks admin. I appreciate the "the numbers work if..., but don't if..." framing -- it makes it easy to understand who's pushing what agenda and how.
