"pay double for smart version, then get fucked."
Previously it was "pay double for same quality but more popular brand". How far advertising has progressed that people sign up for this willingly.
It is always interesting to see that this scumbag corporate behavior is only made possible by the people handing them over money.
It is the same with advertising, if i didnt know any better it appears like people want advertisements all the time.
We, the people, are always outraged. However, we, the people, also arent willing to do anything about it. The power is in our hands.
It's a matter of thresholds and quantities. The business doesn't need everybody to consent to its existence. It just needs to raise enough money to continue existing. And it only needs to continue existing long enough to gobble up the competition so the choice can't be made between them and an alternative retailer the choice must be instead made between getting the thing from them or not getting the thing.
Plenty of us can opt out of patronizing these institutions but that doesn't Force change. That's what government is for.
We aren't going to be able to vote with our wallets hard enough to change business practices that are abusive and toxic. We're going to need the government to do that. That's a substantial part of its job.
I agree. I aggressively abstain from devices that can spy on me. But the pressure to cave mounts more and more as the monopolies do their best to leave us no choice. I don't think I could buy a new car that does not use the cell network to transmit all my data back to the manufacture for example. Even when it comes to just basic activities like going to a sporting event or booking a campsite I'm often forced to either use my phone or not go at all.
