Previously it was "pay double for same quality but more popular brand". How far advertising has progressed that people sign up for this willingly.
It is always interesting to see that this scumbag corporate behavior is only made possible by the people handing them over money.

They just have to add useless shit into something like a fridge and make everything "smart". The profit margins must be so slim on any kind of standard house appliance. They can't just seel a fridge that just keeps your food cold, isn't too expensive, noisy, etc... because most of the offer that and they need this summers buzzword to stand out, or even to please the investors.

If I bought an AI Fridge and this happened, I would most certainly immediately decide and accept "This is the direct consequence of my choices. This is my fault. I had this coming. I deserve this."
What can an AI do for our fridge? I asked myself as I swiped my credit card for a multi thousand dollar purchase. Surely it must do something. Surely this must be an improvement on a dumb box that keeps things cold. I want to talk to my dumb box that keeps things cold, this is certainly a good idea.

Unfortunately it just permanently listens to everything going on in your house, tracks every family member's sleep cycles, eating habits, evaluates your household income based on how often it is restocked and what your brand loyalties are, then feeds all that information to a third party advertising company who sell it to the highest bidder and split the profits with smasnug before showing everyone in the home exactly the right ads to manipulate them into buying more slop.

The refrigerators are truly terrible.
All their other appliances are perfectly fine. Just don't connect them to the internet. In fact, don't connect any of your appliances to the internet. Ever.
I had a client who bought a house with a Whirlpool double oven that connected to the internet, and it locked itself out because it thought the oven had been stolen.
I had to replace the control panel. It cost $1,100.
Is there some sort of epidemic of people stealing double ovens from homes? Why does a double oven need a touchscreen and a Wi-Fi connection? It even has a sensor for the ambient temperature in the kitchen.
An oven is supposed to do one thing: heat your food. That's it. It shouldn't be able to prepare your teenager for the SATs.

What is the benifit of AI in devices like fridges, washing machines and dish washers? We've had these devices for years now, even a 40 year old machine works flawlessly, just uses a bit excessive power. A fridge needs to cool, a washing machine needs to clean. They don't need to do anything else, and they did this perfectly when we didn't have AI.
So to my understanding, AI implemented into these machines is just a way to make it more expensive to buy, adds the option for a subscription for constant income acting as a paywall, gives the opportunity to hoard loads of data from the customers and makes it easy to brick the device just after warranty so people buy more of your devices.
TL:DR:
It's part of a social model that needs everyone to work, even if said work has negative value.
We as a species have the resources to create a leisure society for all.
Instead we are trying to make conscious fridges that can't freeze things.
There is desire and benefit in these things being smart devices and AI is just the stupid label slapped on every smart device after 2024. A benefit of a smart washer is that it can, theoretically, do a more thorough and more efficient job of washing various amounts, sizes, thicknesses, and materials in the load by measuring water usage, balance, weight, and output water condition. A smart fridge can, theoretically, do some lofty things that aren't nearly as desired as just being a media hub. Streaming videos, reordering groceries on Amazon, displaying recipes, displaying weather, displaying pictures, etc - really mor elike a tablet stuck to the fridge.
Implementation of said benefits is a different story. They are obviously consumer surveillance devices with sales pitches to make them "the best" faster than the competition.
A friend of mine had a smart washing machine with AI installed in his building as the previous machine died just after warenty. He used it once but his clothes came out dirty. He now keeps using the old machine next to it, which is roughly 30 years old, as that machine properly cleans his clothes. Why the fuck do I need to know the weather when I grab some yoghert. I have a computer in my pocket which can do everything already. I don't like to see ads whenever I grab something out of my fridge. I prefer my fridge to live longer than 3 years, and just cool things. Why the fuck would I pay more to give it a screen, then to pay monthly not to see fucking ads.
Well, bad news fridges still won't last long and it has nothing to do with Ai or smart features. The industry has downsized the cooling systems for efficiency and environmental factors while making things quieter. The result is higher duty cycles and insulated system compartments generally leading to shorter compressor lifespan.
But yes, I generally agree. I'm not a smart device customer.
If I ever find myself in a stable living environment, I think I'll just buy a couple of cheap chest freezers and set one of them as a fridge.
Put a fan heater in one and strap an old HP touchpad to the side. Should be about the same experience as a samsung fridge
A refrigerator should never need an update. Smart appliances are the stupidest shit I ever heard of. A refrigerator should not need anything but an outlet and maybe a water connection.
look, i wouldn't mind a dashboad where i could see when the dishwasher was run, that the rinse fluid is low, the temperature in the fridge ans freezer over time, how many times the ice machine refilled, when the AC on....

what we got was the ability for the power company to turn of my fridge, requiring a broken app to run cycles on a dishwasher, and spying for no benefit in every device.
The idea has promise and i hold a small glimmer of hope for home assistant. But, like so many things companies did not give anyone what they wanted.
I've spent 20 days waiting for a part from China to (hopefully) repair my 18 year old very basic fridge because I refuse to get some stupid fucking touchscreen internet connected advertising box.

its pretty easy to get a fridge still without a touch screen. The 1st two pages on costco here (I didn't go further) don't have one.

This is dumb, but what's even dumber is making a device that can even fail in that way to start with. I'd have expected the core refrigerator function to be isolated in some way from the rest of the device.
Nothing. Is made. Correctly. Anymore. I went to school for industrial design, and I can comfortably say design and how to communicate proper use are fucking dead. Some thing or website or service is made wrong every fucking time I turn around. It is relentless and unreal.
