this one falls flat. most people have to wake up before 8 to go to work regardless of marital status or kids.

[-] AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 6 days ago

Not on the weekend. I get 2 sleep-ins a week and I wouldn't trade them for anything

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 6 days ago

now see the weekend is a fair point because the typical person does usually have those. The OP though is a bit niche. Granted if your childless with a dog your sleep in time will still be limited. Although you can't take care of kids for 10 mins and then go back to sleep for two hours.

This lol Ive been getting up at 5 since I was 18 and at this point (unless ive like stayed up until 2 for some reason) my body wakes me up at 4:50 every day, work day or no. I'm just used to it 🤷‍♂️

im in a bit of no mans land. im a late nighter by nature but yeah the work world has had me up early (um for me 6am is the ealiest I can handle) but when away from it I slowly over time go back to my nature but it does take awhile.

I don't. My work schedule is flexible, I have a five-minute commute, and I can sleep and wake up pretty much whenever I want to.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

yeah I don't think the average person can get that just by not having kids though.

Ok? Did you only get your job on the condition of remaining childless? If not, it's irrelevant.

Irrelevant? I wouldn't go that far, just your contribution to this discussion is.

[-] Magnum@infosec.pub 1 points 6 days ago

I'm an average guy with an average job

What do you mean? It was about the average person not being able to get up past 8am even if they don't have kids. And I'm saying I'm this average person without kids too. I can get up past 8 and do my job.

Why are you so hostile anyway.

[-] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 0 points 5 days ago

Sorry you feel hostility, just calling it like I see it. You responded to this comment:

yeah I don't think the average person can get that just by not having kids though.

You didn't get your job by not having kids, so it's unrelated. i.e. irrelevant 🤷‍♂️

I'm on track to retire in my mid-30s due to not having the expenses that my co-workers with kids do, and I don't have to do a damn thing before or after work I'm just sitting on a couch drinking a beer and watching anime when I get home. I'm 2 miles from work and don't have to be there until 10 but that's not necessarily the norm.

Damn, you must’ve been fortunate with job placement. Wtf. Half of my 20s was jobless, not for a lack of trying.

[-] freespirits@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

I got my good paying job at 24 and saved most of my money, but as a single person I spent $20k/yr total cost of living while living in a room in someone's basement and a lot of that was just takeout and beer honestly.

[-] FrostyTheDoo@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I'm sorry but if you've been in the workforce for 10 years and are ready to retire soon you're either doing some really bad math, are a prodigy making 7 figures since the age of 24, inherited money from someone else, or are planning to live off beer in someone's basement for the next 50 years

[-] freespirits@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I think 78k was my salary back then, the stock market has done really well the last decade. $1.5 million is the amount I plan to retire with.

[-] Magnum@infosec.pub 2 points 6 days ago

You retire at 35 with 1.5 Million Dollars in the bank? What?

[-] freespirits@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

In investments, if your investments earn 7%/yr which is a fair bit less than you can make off a basic index fund on average you have 4% to live on and 3% for inflation and your money lasts forever.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

no kids here and not sure I will ever be able to afford to retire. early 50's currently.
