No. it actually doesn't. Jesus taught a strict adherence to the Law of Moses. Specifically, the written Law. he states this incredibly clearly in Mathew 5:17-20:
Unless you care to completely ignore the words we ascribe directly to Jesus himself, of course. Which is what most Christians will do. They will say something to effect of "the law is fulfilled therefor he abolished the old covenant and we have a new one", but that's not what jesus is saying at all. What he's saying he came to fulfill is the messianic prophecies. The law itself is eternal, and will persist until the end of times.
There's also a general lack of understanding about the cultural context. Romans were severely oppressing the jewish people. the kingdom of Israel itself was a client-state that had been conquered and subjected to roman rule; and such like. People were angsty. And their traditions taught that they were the chosen people. And in the past, when they got roflstomped by much larger nations, they explained it as their god being pissed at them... because they stopped following the Law that god laid down. (or rather, Moses laid down... details.)
and so god punished them with getting conquered and war. the most famous of these are the Babylonian exile and such like.
So we come to the Roman occupation/oppression/etc of the period and there were a lot of people that were upset that the pharisees followed something called The Law of the Elders, or also, The Oral tradition (Which was the law of moses as passed down orally,), which was a softened version that took off the rough edges of the written law... because frankly, it was straight up awful.
It's a fundamental misunderstanding that Jesus was somehow 'more progressive' than the pharisees. he was actually a fundamentalist. you can see this distinction in when he's beefing with them. For example, Mark 7:
The first part, the accusation by the Pharisees is not part of the written law. It comes from the Oral Tradition. The Pharisees were upset that the disciples were breaking that, and Jesus was like "but you don't even follow the Law of Moses!"... and then cites a law that requires stoning unruly children. Specifically, exodus 21:17 and Leviticus 20:9, which say:
The original written law was something wishy washy, so rabbinic tradition (law of the elders) made it less wishy washy, until there very few justifications for actually stoning children. It started simply as bitching and moaning about your parents, as Jesus took it, and they limited the whole stoning-thing to things much, much more egregious (to the point that the standard was basically never met.)
it's important to note that Jesus and people at that time made very sharp distinctions between classes of people. Jesus wasn't talking about, for example, slaves. Jesus literally had more to say about paying taxes to oppressors than slavery. Not because he didn't encounter slavery (that was probably a daily occurrence, and Jerusalem would have had a thriving slave market,) but because he was fundamentally okay with it. So when jesus talks about 'the least of these', it's important to remember he's talking about his brothers and sisters- presumably his followers. not the slaves who were the literal least in society. to his conception, they weren't people- they were property.
You do realize that your monologue just proved my point.
They were trying to add a lot of substance to your point, with a slight correction that counters the common justification Christians use for their hypocrisy: "we don't have to listen to the old testament if we don't want to because I cast Jesus says shut up"
in what way?
"I did not come to abolish the law" is pretty unambiguous. Its also not that hard to understand. You can argue with me all you want about how Jesus isn't saying what he's saying. But it's very explicit
This gets to a core of why I deconstructed in the first place. Christian doctrine generally relates the original jewish scriptures as being a body of literature that points to Jesus and the New Covenant and that he's the Messiah.
You cannot disregard the "old testament" for the "new testament", because the Old defines the New. In particular, it defines what the Messiah was supposed to be, and what the messiah was supposed to do, and what would happen after the messiah came.
despite all the times in the gospels and elsewhere that are like "And Jesus fullfilled that prophecy by doing this thing"... Jesus failed every single one of those checks.
Even when Jesus is like "And this blood is the new covenant" or whatever creepy death-culty blood magic he's doing (luke 22,) Jesus is referencing Jeremiah 31, specifically verses 31-35.
the entire chapter is about the redemption and restoration of Israel; it's about the messiah, and how everyone is going to have plenty, and be joyful and there's going to be grace and stuff, and that in order to keep people going failing the old covenenant, god's going to offer a new covenant- that the law would be written onto people's hearts and that they would be unable to break the covenant because of it.
you don't have to take my word for it, or even click the link above. Here you go here's the relevant verses:
The Law Jeremiah is talking about is the Law of Moses. That's what will enter people's hearts and they'll follow until the end of times. That is Law Jesus is talking about when he says:
So please, do go on bashing "Fake" Christians as if their god wasn't an absolute fucking monster. Stop pretending like"progressive" christians are any better at understanding scripture. Their god still demanded the slaughter of untold numbers of pregnant women- by running them through with a sword- and the dashing of young babies and children against rocks. (the specific formula for that was grabbing them by the legs and swinging until their brains splattered everywhere.)
The progressive's god demands the stoning of trans and gay men and demands the subservience of women to men treating them as property, expressly allowing fathers to sell their daughters as sex slaves.
People like Talerico might be kind, decent people, who treat most everyone with dignity and respect... but that's in spite of their god. Their god would throw them into hell for their respect and dignity and kindness.
