Agreed on that front, but what are some better questions to get your kid to talk about their day? Mine's still in kindergarten so I can of course ask things like "what did you do today?" and "did you have fun?" since it's not all boring-ass studying, but a few more years and it'll be school.
Things I thought up on the spot right now:
Did you learn anything new today? (Alternatively: What did you learn today)
Do you have any homework for tomorrow? (I'll be able to check this online and I think these days it's an app and you even get push notifications if you don't trust your kid, but I'm of the opinion that talking about things is more important than the information itself)
Are you hungry?
What did you like/dislike about today?
But I'm sure there are better ones
Teacher here.
For the littles, when we reflect on our day, I like to ask things like these:
Obviously not all on the same day.
Usually in the classroom I'll choose one question for reflection at the end of the day and let the kids share their answers. At home, you could talk about two or three at dinner or at bedtime.
I say you should be kind of invested in his relationships and hobbies. Don't interfere with tge relationships but just listen (a read-only type of interaction). Don't make it feel like interrogation.
