I'm no chud, but I'm afraid the thought occurred to me unbidden & it was honestly the only excuse I could come up with to hide behind while also not wasting the joke. Weird mixture of embarrassment & yet wanting to share the joke. I don't know what to say for myself...
In other words... it was projection.
Funny thing. I had a similar situation. I made the joke and the person it was intended for liked it, but other people heard and I had to admit that I overstepped. But live and comment section are different
