I am not even saying that they should stop speaking French. Though I don't understand why anyone would want that. You don't need a new country for that though. If French is so important to the people of Quebec they should share the language instead if creating a border.

And just to clear up some possible preconceptions: English is not my first language either. I do think English is a good candidate for a lingua franca (I see the irony). If Chinese wasn't a tonal language had had so many characters I'd propose that.

try to imagine being in a castle surrounded on all sides by enemies who actively hate you

and your suggestion is to open the gates

Did you build a castle because they hated you or do they hate you because you built a castle. In the latter case opening the gate slowly might be a good idea.

I have never been to Quebec or to Canada. I am just generally opposed to creating new countries. We feel very different but we are not. We are all humans and we have an innate tendency to build groups. But we are not apes in caves anymore. We are thinking complex beings. But we are also very prone to letting people exploit the part in our brain that wants to be part of a group.

I don't want to deny any struggles that people have in Quebec and I don't condone any harassment against people. Still from the outside it feels needlessly divisive to speak French in a predominantly English speaking Country on a predominantly English and Spanish speaking continent. Yes it's cultural. No I don't understand that argument.

If French is so important to the people of Quebec they should share the language instead if creating a border.

It shows that you don't know the history then. French survived in Quebec because the clergy isolated the French community from the English assimilation.

Quebec is French speaking island surrounded by English culture from the rest of Canada and the US. The pressure is extremely strong and French is slowly declining as well.

Quebec bashing is a real thing and there is a history of tensions between French Canadians and English Canadians.

Bashing or any other form of hostility against another group for who they are is not okay. I don't condone that. It's exactly this ingroup/outgroup behavior that I don't want to happen.

I also know that I have a different view on heritage than some other people. For me it's a nice to have but it's more important to find common ground than to chase heritage. My language is not my identity and neither are my traditions.

I don't know why French is declining. If people choose to speak English because they like it better that's okay for me. If the choose English because of negative consequences that's bad.

As for the history: I don't know enough about that but I don't think you need to be protected from English but I don't know what else that would have entailed. Honestly I find it odd though that a little part of a country that speaks mostly English, on a continent that speaks mostly English and Spanish, insists that they speak French.

Language is for communicating and connecting. If it's used for dividing that is bad. And I think we should acknowledge that English is the easier language to learn. I know both languages have their oddities but from my own experience it is much easier to get to a conversational level in English than French. French has a much more complicated grammar (more irregular verbs, more complicated conjugation, more articles, etc.). So maybe more people are using English because it's easy.

In the end I don't want another country to be created and I don't think it will be good for the people of Quebec either. I want people to hash out their differences and get closer together. Share your culture with others and accept other peoples culture goes for everyone. We are all people on this earth and just because of the things we learned when we grew up and what the people before us did on the piece of earth that we grew up on doesn't mean that we have to build a wall to the people that learned something different.
