America has always been violent

[-] crayons_to_chaos@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

I'd argue that in spite of the feckless of attempts, that the US on aggregate has strived to move away from that violent past, but the full throated nature of this sort of thing definitely feels "traditional" in that sense.

When? Doesn't seem to me like they ever stopped invading/attacking poor countries. I guess you're referring to when it switched from "we're doing this for our gain" to "we're doing this for their freedom"?

[-] duckshuffgoose@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 days ago

I think by US on aggregate they are referring to the general populous view. The general populous is at worst split on these world police, liberation crusades

[-] Asidonhopo@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Not to be pedantic but the word you mean is populace not populous.

[-] duckshuffgoose@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago

Lol thanks.....I would certainly say thats pedantic though

[-] crayons_to_chaos@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Yeah, I mean the people. Aggregate not the right word. Ty for the assist there

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

US has a huge amount of violent crime, always has. They can't stop warring since WW2.

Goes all the way back to the colonists commiting genocide against the Natives. Since before it began.

[-] crayons_to_chaos@lemmy.world 0 points 5 days ago

My argument is about the overall striving as a people and a nation, evidenced by a trail of admittedly flawed and leaky legislation whose heart I believe is in fact in the right place. It feels apparent that power sticks its foot in the jamb to hold the door ajar just enough for itself on almost every attempt to make progress.

I concede that US history is horribly marred and shameful, and it behooves us to honor that by not forgetting that past.

I concede that US history is horribly marred and shameful, and it behooves us to honor that by not forgetting that past.

Too bad the American history that is actually taught in schools is entirely sanitized and propagandised to remove anything that would make the country look anything less than heroic and angelic.

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 0 points 5 days ago

You believed wrong. It was always corrupt from the beggining. You just fell for the propaganda.

[-] crayons_to_chaos@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

I didn't say it wasn't corrupt from the beginning. Best not, I think.

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Oh okay, fair enough. People sometimes act like there is something to save. We are well past that point.

[-] crayons_to_chaos@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

We know not what the future holds. America does love a good comeback y'know :)

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I appreciate your optimism
