Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

In short: Don't worry about it.
In long: If you have a problem, you can either do something about it or you can't. If you can do something about it, do that thing instead of worrying. If you can't, worrying just gives you an additional problem.
This is a bit of a trap, because it kind of breeds anxiety.
Most people who are worried are aware that logically, it is unhelpful. You can phrase it however you like but if someone could stop worrying, they would.
Human's are hard wired to "worry" about threats. It's how your ancestors avoided being eaten by a sabre toothed tiger long enough to be someone's ancestor. Worry is in our nature.
As you accrue things you're not worrying about, and as you don't worry about them over time, it can create extraordinary tension which in my case and many others presents as anxiety - an overwhelming and unreasonable response to a threat.
So for loads of people, trying not to worry kinda works until it doesn't.
There's loads of healthier ways to manage worry and anxiety, that I won't try to summarise here, but ACT and CBT are good places to start.
Essentially what you said, but I'd like to phrase it the way a counselor said it to me when I was under a lot of stress at work. Stress is the gap between our expectation and reality. Say you expect to be/produce/achieve/whatever 100%, but you are only capable of achieving 80%. The stress you experience is that 20% gap. Change your expectations to meet your reality and that stress will be resolved.
Now, it may still be that others might still want or expect that 20% from you, but that's their problem and their stress. If you cannot produce it anyway (which created your stress in the first place), existing in the stress-gap clearly won't make you able to do it anyway.
This is essentially the Serenity prayer as used in 12-step programs:
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to know the difference.
That's stoicism in a nutshell. That and amor fati.
