Is it ethical to pirate a game to try it, and buy a license later? (lemmus.org)

My issue is the license part. If I can't own the installer files then it really doesn't seem right anyways.

It's not really piracy unless it deprives someone of a thing. If you want to subscribe to that thing being revenue like the current regimes does, even then you ain't doing that if you are already planning to buy if you enjoy. Why can people do this with physical items, ie:physical returns if the product doesn't meet my requirements or is subpar but not digital media?
