you must not know who Diogenes is.

he's mostly famous for this interaction with Plato.

When Plato defined human beings as featherless bipeds and was praised for the brilliance of his definition. So, Diogenes plucked a chicken, brought it to Plato’s academy and declared “Behold – Plato’s human being.”

given the definition of what a "man not causing any goddamn trouble" looks like, I took the opportunity to provide an example that the definition was inadequate and lacked context.

while looking for the story above I found a plethora of others and found this one amusingly relatable.

Given this disdain for manners, Diogenes was known for his brutal honesty in conversation. He had no regard for social etiquette whatsoever and was known to frequently urinate and masturbate in public. When he was criticized for this, he pointed out that what he was doing was normal, and that everyone engaged in these activities, but hid in private what he did openly.

Oh I'm familiar with Diogenes. He also fucked dogs if you didn't know.

That exchange with Plato wasn't something that really occured, by the way. It was a scene from a satire, pretty sure written by Aristophanes.

that's such a Diogenes thing to do 🤣

in fairness, he did teach the dog to walk upright and shaved it completely bare to meet the definition of a man.

of course it didn't really happen. it wasn't written down until 600 years later by Diogenes Laertius, and even by then the stories were more parables than historical events.
