I do quite firmly believe I have witnessed the death rattles of Reddit with this dystopian data farming nonsense. Absolutely nothing is worth this belittling monitoring shite.

Not having to wade through spam and hate.

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

More diversity would help with the amount of hate already bubbling up here.

More women and more people of color would help balance some of the male-dominated takes that are often supported and uplifted here. There's a lot of sexism and racism that is tolerated or at least appears tolerated because there's no visible pushback.

More diversity leads to humanizing others and reducing hate being directed at certain groups.

[-] femtek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 days ago

Yeah, that's why I joined a queer instance

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

It would be cool to have some queer representation spread out as well. I don't like the idea of allowing the jerks to be the predominant voice in such a space like this when there's a lot of other people I'd love to hear from instead.

[-] femtek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 days ago

I don't have the spoons to teach others not to be assholes anymore. I use social spaces in small doses and bursts.

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

Very understandable! I hope your corners of the internet continue to be supportive and fun :)

[-] femtek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 days ago

Same to you! I really like being able to find and build a community on here. My favorite reddit was wholesome memes before leaving reddit.

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

Oh I just realized I had commented on your post in womensstuff! I was going to recommend that community, but you already found it :)

i had a wierd ban from blahaj the other week, dint realize they were this annoying as the startrek website dude. i think alot of the lgbtq+ went back to reddit, once the large instance shut down last year.

i think most of them are on reddit, and they usually are niche enough they dont get too much attention, i think its a good thing though, because too much attention will just draw into many homophobes.

[-] jdr@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 days ago

You don't like the skin colour distribution on Lemmy?

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Eh, I think this place is populated primarily by cis white men and that can have an effect on what type of comments and posts are tolerated.

[-] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Could be. I haven't seen any demographic data. There does seem to be a lot of LGBTQ+ people, but that could just be the forums I'm using.

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

Well, I didn't mention anything about sexual orientation in my comment, but yeah there does seem to be more LGBTQ+ people than the average here. I still think it's mostly cis white men.

[-] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

Nothing about orientation, but you did say cis white men, and the T in LGBTQ+ is "trans". I think you're probably right, but I don't have anything empirical to back it up.

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

I would be shocked if there were more trans people on the Fediverse than cis people. Like....let's be real here.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

i do notice that too, im poc asian just even explaining on how asia perception of western people(especially white people) seems different from how asia is percieved.

[-] yucandu@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Eh, I think this place is populated primarily by cis white men

Maybe that's because of your own prejudices.

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

No, I really think that’s the majority demographic here. Like statistically, not emotionally.

[-] yucandu@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago
[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

I gotta know if the demographics surprised you or not haha

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago
[-] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Wow, I was way off on the age distribution.

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

The largest age group of visitors are 18 - 24 year olds.

Just pulling the info out into the comments :)

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

They’re probably similar to Reddit, but I’ll go digging for stats. Do you really think the majority of users here are women?

[-] yucandu@lemmy.world -4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

There's a lot of sexism and racism that is tolerated or at least appears tolerated because there's no visible pushback.

Could you define sexism/racism? It's gotten to the point where those words are like "woke" and can mean anything to anyone.

Like if you're talking about someone saying that someone is genetically inferior/superior because of their race or sex, then tell me so I can go tear them a new one.

But if it's anything other than that, then I genuinely don't care about your version of "sexism" or "racism", and I think the general public is starting to learn that you use those words to mean everything from the KKK to being impolite.

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

You think it’s gotten to the point that sexism and racism are “like ‘woke’”?

[-] RestrictedAccount@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

It is marginally harder to be a butt when you know you are going to get called on it

That said, it is pretty much an echo chamber in here

[-] femtek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 days ago

Depends, smaller focused groups can kick out bigots better than massive spaces from my experience.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

smaller niche communities, subs can do that. but when that smaller focused group becomes large they start kicking out people even for the slightest infraction.

[-] RestrictedAccount@lemmy.world 0 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

A lot of the smaller groups kick out people who just disagree with them

And not just for being racists or bigots

For example, I don’t personally believe that the kind of people who can afford to commute by bike need a safe space to be protected from someone pointing out that their expressed glee at auto accidents is callously political.

If you do your comments will be deleted.

They have some things to teach Musk about being snowflakes.

(Really, in modern US cities, only rich white dudes commute by bike. No single mom is biking her kids to daycare on her way to her shift at the chemical plant. Those roads don’t get bike lanes anyway.)

Edit: and the mod deleted my post for bigotry lol

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

i always found the bike community forums/subs always have wierd obsession in trying to turn everywhere they think they can ride into a bike only zone. people sitll need to commute by car or public transit, it just hurts those people. and there bike communities in irl that are douchey.
