Why is pro wrestling in sports though?

edit: Ok, since people are calling that soap opera "sports" because of athletic performance, gonna watch some sports here with the Bruce Lee box collection. It checks all the same boxes.

Well, a gymnastics routine is scripted. Cheer routines are scripted. They aren't always done his competition, though that is the part anyone not participating will see.

Martial arts are not scripted, but aren't inherently competitive. To the contrary, there's a pretty firm division between competitive fighting arts and non competitive ones.

Pro wrestling has scripted outcomes for sure. You don't "win" unless whatever company you wrestle for has decided you're getting an arc where you're the winner. But it is also very athletic. As much or more so than cheer, marital arts, or gymnastics. There's a degree of improvisation to it as well. You have a roughly mapped out plan going into the performance, but a big chunk of what happens in the ring is based on adapting to the mood of the crowd, positioning, the needs of the performers, etc.

In that regard, it's similar to dance.

It gets reported with sports, and has for decades. It's not a rare or recent occurrence. What is recent is LGBTQ representation in wrestling. That's big news, period. That a company decided that someone in that community was going to be allowed to win at all is really damn cool, even though I'm not a fan of pro wrestling overall.

Sports kinda generalized. A sport doesnt require a game to be played(e.g Dance is a sport)

Leans more on the athletic side still, albeit being (generally) fake. The flip side of the sporting debate are the sports that are sports but are unatheletic (e.g lawn games, precision games such as shooting)

If it's a dancing competition... I say that because pro wrestling is scripted, "winning" really means nothing, it's like watching a fight in a movie, it's just entertainment (Van Damme winning the Kumite tournament in Bloodsports isn't something to be on the sports section, and it's as meaningful as a pro wrestling match...)

I've never liked WWE but I don't think every move happening during the matches is scripted, and they're still out there performing stunts that require athleticism. Plus having a winner isn't really what defines a sport, because there are people doing like parkour or base jumping or other athletic displays that most people agree are sports.
