We'll see how code quality develops. I'd hate to have to switch to FreeBSD.

I am not terribly worried. These are some of the most seasoned veteran engineers who have put in their time with hand-tools. They take quality very seriously. Just because Linus has the clankers chasing some performance improvements doesn't mean he's abdicating his stance on quality.

exactly! people are being so snarky about it and i’m just over here like “well i bet linus fucking torvalds probably knows more about this than i do”

Yeah, out of any dev on the planet who I would trust with using AI in development, Linus is pretty much the top of the list. He's not going to let any slop code in. It will be good, or it will be tossed, regardless of the source.

That said, there are still countless environmental and moral issues with AI.

They are and they do, but I worry about the volume of changes. More chat bots finding more bugs, more patches written by chat bots both means more reviews to be made. Which might be helped by chat bots.
All that wouldn't be a problem if the chat bots weren't regression-to-the-mean machines.

They aren't throwing away code standards.

Ai generated code still has to meet artisnal standards.

But it's relatively easy to overwhelm the human reviewers if it costs virtually no time to generate a "fix" for a "bug."

That is true. There has been several high profile cases of bug bounty programs being closed because of AI beg bounties.

Curl being the most notable one, to my knowledge.

Man, I should really read my comments before sending.

Because the last time I tried it was comparatively difficult to find software. GNU/Linux kinda became the defacto standard Unix-like OS.
