Welcome to the News community!
Rules:
1. Be civil
Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.
2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.
Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.
Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.
5. Only recent news is allowed.
Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.
6. All posts must be news articles.
No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.
7. No duplicate posts.
If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.
8. Misinformation is prohibited.
Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.
9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.
All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.
10. Don't copy entire article in your post body
For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.
"Why don't the pillars of frozen suffering faces simply rise up against the cenobites? It must be because they're also evil, actually. I am very smart."
Show me where I called anyone evil. Or where I claimed to be smart.
Maybe just say what you think it says about the population, so we don't have to guess what your real point is.
I'll take a crack at it for him, as a born and raised American who has since left.
Nobody is saying everyone in America is evil. In fact, fantastic and incredible and amazing people live there.
But as an aggregate population, they put Trump in charge. There is no getting around that. We can hem and haw all we want about "only X percentage of the population voted" and whatever nonsense we want to to make us feel better about the US population in the aggregate, but at the end of the day enough people either wanted this, or didn't care enough to stop it, to make this happen. That is not a condemnation of every American - in the same way that calling Russia an evil country is not a condemnation of every Russian, but if anything, the population of the US is MORE culpable for this mess because their elections, at least in 2024, meant something.
I'm sure you and most of the people you know are damn fine, respectable, incredible people. But that's not the whole anymore. The country as a whole has lost the plot, and I'm not convinced they can ever get it back.
**republicans have lost the plot. the voters are mindless cattle. the politicians//influencers are unironically evil
Well maybe, in point of fact I'm also a recovering American. I see American democracy as fundamentally broken at this point, so I tend to find fault with anyone describing Americans based on election results. Democracy has been under attack ever since the business plot, and it was never in great shape to begin with. Blame Nixon and every (including Democrats) president and congressperson since him for letting it happen in slow-motion plain daylight.
At this point? I think one of the first political discussions I had with my father was that the US legal and democratic system are broken beyond repair and have been for decades now. It took Trump's ideocracy to make it painfully obvious.
Arguably I think many countries have arrived or will be arriving at the threshhold of functionality. So far the only two remedies that history provides are revolution or utter capitulation after losing a war. Let's hope we find another less violent yet systematically equally disruptive solution. I for one cling to the believe that there's still hope.
I would absolutely welcome being wrong and that there's a chance to fix things, but in my heart of hearts, I subscribe to the John Gustafson Sr view about hope.
I say the solution is relentless prosecution of the traitor party
On the remedies, I agree that it's necessary but I have my doubts about the rest.
They certainly accelerated things, but the fact is, people had every single opportunity at the ballot box to choose better and failed to do so. There were no tanks rolling down Pennsylvania Avenue. This was not a coup. Getting to this point happened because enough of the populace were complicit. I'm glad you're also a recovering American, but the people who are left have to really consider when they say "This isn't us." No, it isn't you, but as a whole country? This might be "us", and it's time to seriously consider the company they're keeping.
Certainly. I'm always caught between remembering that there are good Americans and the disappointing reality of being a 'good person' living in an evil empire in its final floundering years.
I don't think anyone is in a realistic position to save the US at this point. The money is in charge, and it only wants one thing. When it stops getting it, there's nowhere safe from what will happen.
More cryptic and obtuse bullshit.
