MODERATORS
I know this may sound ignorant to modern game development, but do we optimize anymore? I know storage is not an issue most developers worry about these days, but God.
I don't like to play the old card, because I'm by no means "old", but I remember when I wanted to install a game, I had to choose what I needed to uninstall first. A game being 500MB to 1GB was mind boggling.
They throw in massive poly count models with high resolution textures and ever bigger game worlds, then (on PC) let you scale down the quality.
Only real solution is having high res textures as a separate download which some games do but if the console can handle them anyway, there's less reason, compared to PC where you might have a lower end graphics card that can't handle 4K textures anyway
On consoles, developers still duplicate assets for HDD optimization (faster loading, more storage). Often they don't bother to 'fix' that for PC when ported.
Current gen consoles have NVMe thankfully so that bullshit is now obsolete at least
I stand corrected!
The PS5 was supposed to have fixed that duplication issue with it's SSD and how data from it is retrieved and cached
Given prices of hardware these days devs should definitely be better at this.
