People wanted a new Twitter and just completely ignored Mastadon. 🙄

[-] chewypoops@lemmy.world 55 points 3 days ago

Yeah, but joining an instance is so hard guys. How am I supposed to know which one to join? What if I join the wrong one? The human brain was never meant to know more than one domain name.

The whole Internet should just be one single website so I don't have to think. But I will complain about how only one rich guy owns that website, but I'll do it on that website since it's the "public square".

I want a decentralized democratic system but the only way to get there is to centralize power and give it to one entity!

I think it’s better to explain instances as phone booths or conference rooms.

[-] chewypoops@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

That's an awful comparison.

It's like email.

You can have a gmail.com address, and send and receive emails between yahoo.com and hotmail.com addresses without issues. Nobody really cares which provider you chose, and if you really want to, you can register your own domain and host email yourself.

If this doesn't land, then the person you're talking to probably has never used a computer.

Okay thank you

and just like with email if you choose the wrong domain you can't send messages to people on mainstream domains without it being sent to spam.

But they are just different entraces to the same "public square": the fediverse

[-] fractal618@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

That’s where I’m not 100% sure. Either each instance maintains a copy of the public square, or there is no public square each piece of content is hosted on one instance and viewable from other instances

The bluesky conference room is muting participants in the conference call

[-] zebidiah@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 days ago

Well.... They did get a new Twitter lol

[-] Zorque@lemmy.world 36 points 3 days ago

Well yeah, they wanted a new twitter, not something different and potentially better.

I remember Mastodon gaining a lot during the Elonification of twitter. Doesn't seem like it's all bad. I don't want to be even more doom pilled.

[-] Hanrahan@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

i didn't, I'm on Mastodon and would never consider Bluesky.

Mastodon dodged a bullet though. It could've been them.
