I guess I kind of understand why companies want you to be logged in to engage with their platform, as the user metrics are the main selling point to advertisers, but man do I really fucking hate it when a platform forces me to log in by preventing me from using their website. So much so, that I haven't made an account on Instagram or X or Facebook or whatever dumb social media platform specifically because I can't browse without signing up. Well, that, and also the greed, the lack of privacy, the tacit endorsement of fascism, et. cetera.

No, I don't want to make an account.

No, I don't want to download your app.

No, I don't want to turn on notifications.

Gah, fuck off with all this horseshit. The internet used to be fun. Now everything is a chore and nobody does anything unless they feel like they can make a profit off of it.

The big problem is most people say "Ugh, fine, I'll log in with Google," rather than you and I who say "Ugh, no."

I don't have a problem with someone making a website for logged in users only. What sucks is making this open anonymous forum that was quite good for years and then locking it down once people are addicted to it. Well, this doesn't change much for me i deleted my reddit years ago and haven't been back at all.

only way they can even do this is how much users they already have and how entrenched those users are. Its insane how much people are willing to put up with to keep using the shitty services, just because they have used them for long time.

No, I don’t want to make an account.

No, I don’t want to download your app.

This combo drives me up the fuckin wall.

Obviously I think reddit is trash, but I can kind of understand other forums requiring a login (several of the small, private communities I'm a part of require them) but there is no good reason to push people to an app other than avarice.

It's extra frustrating because I created cosmetic filters for uBlock Origin that allow me to access individual Reddit posts (so I can still read Reddit posts that I find through a search engine) but not any of the feeds so that I can't waste time scrolling. I can't use those on the app.

I mean, that's capitalism. It was inevitable. A similar fate will befall Lemmy at some point, so enjoy it while you can.

With all due respect to you and the user above as people, fuck the defeatist attitudes. We're going to make and keep this little part of the Internet fun, no matter what corporations say. I've had a great 3.5 years on Lemmy despite the occasional dramatic event. And I'm counting on myself and every one of us to continue to make it so.

Entropy is also inevitable, but that doesn't mean we can't keep a small space of less entropy than average while we're here.

press x to doubt.

Seriously, there's a low chance for that.

  • lemmy is not a service but an open source software
  • public lemmy services are ran like a "public service", for the benefit of the public. an instance cannot just lock down its access to users without exiting the federation. and if it exits the federation, it will become worthless basically, as they'll lose all the external content. yes lemmy.ml and lemmy.world are too big, which is a problem, but I don't think they could pull it off easily either.
  • lemmy developers are loudly marxist, they oppose capitalism. so both the software itself, and the lemmy.ml instance are unlikely to change in the way you tell
