A moment of silence for those gooners who, for one reason or another, need to goon anonymously...

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 8 points 2 hours ago

It's becoming a "fuck this I'm going somewhere else" experience.

[-] CouchKiller789@lemmy.today 13 points 3 hours ago

Lol, I prefer a [deleted] experience.

[-] sicktriple@lemmy.sdf.org 21 points 3 hours ago

it might as well have been already, if you use a VPN you're surely accustomed to the Fedora Teletubby

It's a shame because it's genuinely a useful repository of information. I wish infinite humiliation and discomfort upon Reddit's leadership.

[-] Gasspatron@thelemmy.club 17 points 3 hours ago

I just came here from there. Reddit is getting weird AF

[-] vatlark@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago

Welcome. You come to find a more free alternative... You stay for the beans, powdered milk, and art.

[-] fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 5 points 3 hours ago

Everyone types like they're the same person

[-] gwl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 hour ago

Coincidentally, the fediverse is suddenly gaining a lot of new users, especially Lemmy/Piefed

[-] uberfreeza@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

Not much of a concern for me or anyone else who hates ai, but would this impact google ai's ability to cite reddit when it tells you to add glue to your pizza, among other things? because i like the poisoned well

[-] kaito@lemmy.world 1 points 4 minutes ago

Google already has exclusive access to Reddit...

[-] stateofaffairs@lemmy.today 9 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

I've been trying to distance myself from Reddit and I think that settles it for me. I can get my share of the dead internet elsewhere!

[-] Squizzy@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Lemmy is less active but could be good. I fear the third party cunts will excel here now that reddit is gone. Astroturfing andthelikes.

[-] Kichae@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 hours ago

Fediverse severs have a bit of a natural size limit, which means site-level moderation is easier. Admins also aren't motivated by ad impressions or vanity metrics that impress investors, so there's that, too.

It doesn't remove bad actors, of course, and there will be no lack of bad admins, but it's still more friction than exists on corporate sits.

[-] Kichae@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 hours ago

Those of us still with active Reddit accounts, now might be a good time to gently encourage people on Reddit to check out the Fediverse. Suggest your favourite Fediverse website by URL (don't just say "Lemmy" or something; we know people trip over themselves to hate on the whole choosing a website thing).

I don't know if it's a good idea or a bad idea to mention the state of smaller or niche communities, but it feels more honest to me to just say that we could use more people here who are willing to build an alternative, and not just scroll one.

[-] Redvenom@retrolemmy.com 3 points 3 hours ago

is reddit still a thing or is just bots talking to each other?

[-] veniasilente@feddit.cl 4 points 3 hours ago

I'm just waiting for the communities I'm in to move from Reddit hopefully to the Fediverse, and it'll be goodbye for good.

In the meantime tho, I intend for my account to continue to be somewhat useful while at the same time not really a good marketing data point. I intend to offer RaaS ("Reddit as a Service") where people who don't have accounts / can't log in can ask me to fetch the text of a given post that I find to be of good interest. Crossposting the content from Reddit to here would help to keep the intended conversation alive, without needing Jailbait Spez as an intermediary.

[-] flop_leash_973@lemmy.world 23 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

They are going to end up burning the whole thing to the ground in a bid to make investors money on something that never had hard quantifiable monetary value to begin with in a way that you could easily turn up the dial on "line go up" enshitification like Google can with ad impressions.

Its a fancy web forum, a big popular one for sure, but there are God knows how many similar options out there already competing for users. There is a very low ceiling on just how profitable it could ever be as a business all on its own.

There is a reason a lot of these websites, like Gamespot for example, ended up consolidating into holding companies that own a bunch of them.

I guess I kind of understand why companies want you to be logged in to engage with their platform, as the user metrics are the main selling point to advertisers, but man do I really fucking hate it when a platform forces me to log in by preventing me from using their website. So much so, that I haven't made an account on Instagram or X or Facebook or whatever dumb social media platform specifically because I can't browse without signing up. Well, that, and also the greed, the lack of privacy, the tacit endorsement of fascism, et. cetera.

No, I don't want to make an account.

No, I don't want to download your app.

No, I don't want to turn on notifications.

Gah, fuck off with all this horseshit. The internet used to be fun. Now everything is a chore and nobody does anything unless they feel like they can make a profit off of it.

[-] HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world 4 points 3 hours ago

The big problem is most people say "Ugh, fine, I'll log in with Google," rather than you and I who say "Ugh, no."

I don't have a problem with someone making a website for logged in users only. What sucks is making this open anonymous forum that was quite good for years and then locking it down once people are addicted to it. Well, this doesn't change much for me i deleted my reddit years ago and haven't been back at all.

[-] reksas@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 hours ago

only way they can even do this is how much users they already have and how entrenched those users are. Its insane how much people are willing to put up with to keep using the shitty services, just because they have used them for long time.

Well, I think they're thinking that AI bots can't see the page because they can't log in and it'll protect open source information from being obfuscated by Ai. In reality though, it just forces inconvenience for the humans.

[-] gwl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 hour ago

That's really giving them too much credit.

This is all about data collection and data theft, to sell your data to advertisers

Hoping this triggers an exodus to lemmy and mbin to make the communities a little more active.

[-] theywilleatthestars@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Aww man, I'm gonna miss lurking on r/gallifrey

[-] loklok@lemmus.org 1 points 3 hours ago

This sound good for Lemmy. Congratulations!

[-] dasrael@lemmy.zip 18 points 7 hours ago

yep, they've been turning up the dial for some time now ...slowly implementing anti-mobile browsing nags and locking down content by classification. And good on them, nothing will ruin their run faster than their own enshittification efforts.

[-] recarsion@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

I feel like reddit will eventually become like Facebook in that only lame people will still use it, but it will be a big enough percentage that it's going to be unavoidable in a very annoying way.
