If Proton is looking for a CEO that's a) Not an ass b) Has a bunch of degrees and c) Will trust and support experts in the workplace because I don't know enough about tech to act like a pretentious jerk...

I am looking for work.

Be me. Try to do the right thing. Do what society tells me. Work hard. Get hit in the face by the rock of life and am stumbling hard.

Be them. Worst of the worst, crimes against absolutely everyone and everything. Reach the pinnacle of success.

I really think the Germans need to come up with a new word for the contrast I've stated.

Well, glass half contaminated I guess.

I'm with you. Look. This hijacks this thread and maybe I should post elsewhere, but, fuck it. Social media is neither social nor media. It's a hellscape that encourages the worst to rise to the top -most of the time.- Have I had lovely interactions and met cool people? Yes. But those moments are absolutely a drop in the bucket compared to the harm.

I was reviewing my own writing today and looking at my numbers. They're not great. Every single guide I read says I have to be active on social media. 10-15 posts, commenting on other peoples work, all with the hope traffic flows my way.

Sweet mother in buddha. I don't have it in me to be that present online. Let alone online and actively engaging in social media. I just feel like I need to cleanse myself in a combination of bleach and ammonia (yes, I know what that does) when I try.

It made it easier, yes. Not arguing against that. And the name of the corporation with that alternative? DuPont.

I've been trying to distance myself from Reddit and I think that settles it for me. I can get my share of the dead internet elsewhere!

Update:

I deleted my Reddit Account. Now, I must consider moving off Proton...so much change.

We are passed a habitable and comfortable zone for a diverse world. Its gone.

Governments allowed power companies, automakers, and petrochemical companies and now big tech corporations to trash an entire planet. We sped to our ruin starting in the late 19th century. When Edison turned on a power plant and tried to hide the smoke and tar from inspectors. In 150 years through greed and avarice. Gone.

When humans learned about the damage, we basically swept it under the rug. When corporate labs found out about it, they buried the lead, bribed, and attacked any alternative. The evidence is there and it's quite damning. Not only to companies like Exxon who knew, but to anyone claiming money and power are good. That things like moral ambition or affective altruism justify actions. New veneers for a rotten age.

I am, sadly, convinced it won't start to incite action - real change -until its really bad. The political and educational climate is not supportive.

Tragically, we almost got there. We had a template with the Ozone solution. Even a pretty shit company had an alternative product. CFCs were widely regarded as a bad move and people believed the scientists. You don't hear about the hole in the Ozone and of you're young enough, you probably have no idea it was a problem. Alf, the stupid fuzzy alien TV sitcom, even had an episode calling a CEO to ask him to get rid of CFCs. And we did it. Politics, advocacy, and even business for its own gains of course, did it. And we were almost there as early as the Carter era with climate change. Alas, solar on the white house roof is the perfect symbol for our potential change. You can look up what transpired.

Kyoto and Paris were great. Renewables were coming. The Petrol States (especially KSA and Qatar) killed it all because the people in charge of our governments were, frankly, cowards unwilling to fight back. Unwilling to hold other nations, companies, and voices who were lying.

Someone, somewhere, can start to heal this. But it'll take a worldwide political revoltution to stop the bleeding. Frankly, again, we can't convince people the earth is round right now so I'm not optimistic.

DHS formed in the wake of 9/11 because federal agencies could not get their shit together and collaborate. Whether by design or rapid evolution, it became less of a coordinating agency between disparate federal intelligence agencies and more of a mysterious extra-judicial entity with a military arm. Oh and TSA. Let's not forget about humble ole' TSA.

Pre War is not good enough for such luxury. What you need is:

antebellum

"Wow, this vinyl flooring. SO Antebellum!"

A Governance Dilemma (lecternmedia.substack.com)

An assassination exposes the cracks in German unification. East German workers and officials decry the dehumanizing effects of economic joining. A baker, a steelworker, and factory leader now without value and identity in a foreign system. Anger and anxiety were all some of them had left.

Those emotions never went away. The East German states reforged by unification are today the stronghold of the far right.

I heard this on a podcast and think it explains quite abit about the mentality of these executives. They are effective altruists with long termism, mixed in with a healthy dose of narcissism and greed of course. But the later two are not what I want to discuss.

Effective Altruists, or those subscribing to Moral Ambition have a sort of ends justify the means look at it all. You do everything you can to amass power and wealth so you can make the world a better place. When you add that in with longtermism, that all the suffering now is meaningless because it's the countless billions of humans coming later that matter, and you gain some clarity regarding their worldviews and morality. That is, of course, without considering what they think "a better place" means. To these individuals, it's a world shaped in their image. How they see fairness, and work, and love. And it is not a place most human beings, I wager, want to see come to fruition.

I must be clear I am not saying this is right, nor altruistic, nor condoning it. I find the entire amalgam of ideas and influences rotten. It just offers some perspective on what is driving these people.

The Fire This Time (lecternmedia.substack.com)

Hey all! New here, looking for something a little unique. Coffee Roasting Manual, Parts Catalogues, etc.

In a past career I was a coffee roaster, Q grader, and educator for the SCAA (now the SCA). I spent some time trying to collect manuals before life and events pushed me into a research and academic trajectory. I've been returning to my old hobby and am a little shocked that there's so little out there. Despite the popularity of restoring old roasters, using them, and hobbyist enthusiasm, there's a wealth of information vanishing from the field.

Be it Pre-1950s Probats, old guides from San Franciscan or Diedrich's earlier days, a Sivetz that looks like a jet engine, The materials that came with the machines, or let people order spare parts, are simply vanishing. In discussions with colleagues and friends, the 2nd and 3rd wave of coffee materials are vanishing, too.

So I'm on a quest to use what I know about research and archiving to collect as much as possible. If you know a person willing to share, point them my way.

Here's what I've recovered from nearly a decade ago. Stored on a flash drive, it's now uploaded again. It's a discovery that sparked this inquiry a decade or so later:
