MODERATORS
I bought one this year and have no regret what so ever.
I havent been a console gamer for quite a few years but now my PC is getting on a bit and the component prices are disgusting I started considering other options. Thankfully because of Sony's disgusting business practice's spurring everyone on the hacking scene right now is popping off!
I now have something I can play newer games at at a better resolution / speed but I can also play the entire PlayStation back catalogue, emulating nearly every other system with varying levels of success, but they are all improving daily. And now I can also log into my steam and download / play my games from there. Again it still isnt perfect but it is improving everyday.
So basically I got myself a new PC in a roundabout way but that can also play everything PlayStation.
I buy everything secondhand so those pricks didnt get any of my money and got a disc drive version so I can pick up physical.
It was a great decision for me!
But don’t you have to run the exploit every time you turn on the Playstation?
I used to be on firmware 13.6 but I gave up and updated because there was a Playstation game I wanted to play and couldn’t without updating (Project Motor Racing).
Yeh, so? It takes literally 10 seconds tops to run the exploit when you boot up using the method I use. There is an optimised version that does it in about a second or you could leave it in sleep mode and not need to again. I don't really see how that is any kind of deterrent at all when the trade off is what you are then able to do with the console.
Updating for some specific game is super impatient as there will always be backports down the line, you just need to wait.
There are now 14.0 jailbreaks but currently 13.6 is working too well.
I get that not everyone wants to dabble with things like this but it is all so simple these days and allows you to actually use your hardware for what you want to do with it, not what those pricks at Sony deem is acceptable. You know, like how it is impossible to run PS3 games on a PS5 according to them yet they are now running straight from the disc.
Do you need to be connected to the internet to run the exploit every time? What's the method to do it in around a second?
Yeah I know it's impatient to update just for one game. It also ain't the only reason as the console is a family console and my kids probably wouldn't have the ability yet to run an exploit every time they start it.
I'm still keeping an eye on transforming my Playstation in a GOG/Steam Machine, but I'm also thinking I should just enjoy it the way it is before investing in a decently powerful Linux gaming PC once the PS5 generation is kind of over.
Yeh that is fair enough if you are catering to kids as well then that changes it somewhat. You do need to be connected to the internet for the moment. The YouTube jailbreak is the one that has been optimised to around a second. I use that same one but an older version that takes around 10 seconds but hasnt failed once yet.
There is a new blueray based jailbreak that has been announced and is working just no super reliable at the moment. This just requires a blueray disc to be burnt with a payload on it, so when that matures I'm sure there will be a reliable, without internet way of doing it.
With the speed everything is progressing I'm hoping that before long there will be something that can be done to just permanently enact these changes but for the trade offs, for me, it is worth that little extra time each boot.
Having been on a 1660ti for the longest times just exploring the ps4 and 5 catalogue has given me lots to play before I start trying to load steam games on mine :D
