I've heard about Sony receiving bad publicity due to their plans on phasing out physical games by 2028 (heck even the upcoming PS6 has no leniency for a disc drive as its digital by default), so that leads into the question: is it worth spending money on a PS5 knowing their recent business practices? Also, the library seems lacking if you're looking for unique exclusives to play (since most are ports from PS4 titles).

I rather regret buying ours now. I was kinda dubious at the time, but there were several games we love, and were in the middle of playing when the one we were using was no longer available. So I did something I rarely do and bought one on credit

We use it most days for something or other, but there's a big part of me that wishes I could go back and tell myself to just do without and keep plugging cash away for a steam machine instead of that.

I share your feeling.

I’ve used it enough, but I’d really prefer having a decent Likux gaming PC alongside my Steam Deck instead of the Playstation 5.

Every time I’m buying a Playstation 5 game, I know it’s kind of wasted because I’m switching to PC and might not be able to play this game there except with emulation.

I absolutely refuse to buy more PS games at this point. My wife may, and that's her business, but I won't even but discs at this point.

But then you bought a Playstation 5 for nothing if you’re keeping it and not playing games on it at all.

Not judging as you do as you please, but then why don’t you sell it? Is your wife using it?

My game ratio is something like 9 GOG/Steam 1 Playstation physical game.

I didn't say we don't use it. I think I said otherwise. I'm not buying any more games

The PS5 Pro is $1,000 at Best Buy right now, you can buy a pretty decent PC for about that much right now. So no, absolutely not worth buying a console right now. I would suggest waiting until the PS6 is 2 years old and try buying a used gen2 PS5 or see if you can find a used gen1 PS5 for cheap now. If you're going to spend the money then don't pay more than you have to. I would sell my PS5 if I wasn't still using it as a 4k Blueray player. I would bet that the PS6 generation will be the last home console generation, the future will be cloud/streaming, but still cost way too much.

The exclusives library is pretty thin for consoles, so unless you just prefer the console experience then I would suggest going PC. A lot of exclusives are getting ported anyway.

As for the "no disc" thing, that's been the trend since the PS4 generation. PCs have been no disc for decades but the issue with consoles is the monopoly of the manufacturer, the only loophole was to purchase used games, but the manufacturers are closing that loop. Owning the disc doesn't really mean that you can still play the game if Sony stops supporting the console anyway. At least when a PC game is no longer supported then it usually gets a DRM patch from stores like GOG and AbandonWare or from a hack.

For any console, the question comes down to:

"Does it have games you want to play?"

Check the PS5 library, if you don't like the games, then it will be a waste of money. For me, I don't have a PC, and I enjoy playing on PS5. The way things are going, I am not looking forward to buying PS6 on launch, but unless things turn much worse, I'll probably get it down the line anyway.

I bought one this year and have no regret what so ever.

I havent been a console gamer for quite a few years but now my PC is getting on a bit and the component prices are disgusting I started considering other options. Thankfully because of Sony's disgusting business practice's spurring everyone on the hacking scene right now is popping off!

I now have something I can play newer games at at a better resolution / speed but I can also play the entire PlayStation back catalogue, emulating nearly every other system with varying levels of success, but they are all improving daily. And now I can also log into my steam and download / play my games from there. Again it still isnt perfect but it is improving everyday.

So basically I got myself a new PC in a roundabout way but that can also play everything PlayStation.

I buy everything secondhand so those pricks didnt get any of my money and got a disc drive version so I can pick up physical.

It was a great decision for me!

But don’t you have to run the exploit every time you turn on the Playstation?

I used to be on firmware 13.6 but I gave up and updated because there was a Playstation game I wanted to play and couldn’t without updating (Project Motor Racing).

Yeh, so? It takes literally 10 seconds tops to run the exploit when you boot up using the method I use. There is an optimised version that does it in about a second or you could leave it in sleep mode and not need to again. I don't really see how that is any kind of deterrent at all when the trade off is what you are then able to do with the console.

Updating for some specific game is super impatient as there will always be backports down the line, you just need to wait.

There are now 14.0 jailbreaks but currently 13.6 is working too well.

I get that not everyone wants to dabble with things like this but it is all so simple these days and allows you to actually use your hardware for what you want to do with it, not what those pricks at Sony deem is acceptable. You know, like how it is impossible to run PS3 games on a PS5 according to them yet they are now running straight from the disc.

Do you need to be connected to the internet to run the exploit every time? What's the method to do it in around a second?

Yeah I know it's impatient to update just for one game. It also ain't the only reason as the console is a family console and my kids probably wouldn't have the ability yet to run an exploit every time they start it.

I'm still keeping an eye on transforming my Playstation in a GOG/Steam Machine, but I'm also thinking I should just enjoy it the way it is before investing in a decently powerful Linux gaming PC once the PS5 generation is kind of over.

Yeh that is fair enough if you are catering to kids as well then that changes it somewhat. You do need to be connected to the internet for the moment. The YouTube jailbreak is the one that has been optimised to around a second. I use that same one but an older version that takes around 10 seconds but hasnt failed once yet.

There is a new blueray based jailbreak that has been announced and is working just no super reliable at the moment. This just requires a blueray disc to be burnt with a payload on it, so when that matures I'm sure there will be a reliable, without internet way of doing it.

With the speed everything is progressing I'm hoping that before long there will be something that can be done to just permanently enact these changes but for the trade offs, for me, it is worth that little extra time each boot.

Having been on a 1660ti for the longest times just exploring the ps4 and 5 catalogue has given me lots to play before I start trying to load steam games on mine :D
