A Maryland hairdresser who voted for Donald Trump in 2024 after believing his promises to lower living costs said she has since lost her home and car, struggled to pay her credit cards, and watched customers disappear from her business. Now, she bitterly regrets helping return him to the White House, declaring that only the devil could govern with such cruelty.

Celia Salmerón, 58, accused the Trump administration of bringing hardship rather than the financial relief he promised voters. She immigrated from El Salvador as a child, and now runs a hair salon in a working-class Maryland neighbourhood with a large Hispanic population.

'He promised to give us money. But he didn't give us anything. What he gave us this time were problems,' Salmerón recently told a media outlet, adding that she had been unable to keep up with her debts and had lost almost everything she worked to build.

'Ever since Trump came in, I have been bankrupt. I have lost everything: my house, my car. I can't pay my credit cards,' she said.

I've always wondered how people got fooled by such obvious lies. Now I'm getting the picture of someone who probably based their decision on nothing but a couple of ads. The mediocre honest promises have no chance against grandiose lies if they believe both.

I have family that fell into this. Blame things confidently on one or two big bad outgroups, DARVO anything to the contrary, and make the other group plenty-othered. Bonus points if they're non-christian or "fake" christians (catholics, LDS, whatever).

It's never that simple, but news bubbles and social media can sure make it look like that to people, especially those who may have declining faculties in age.

Single issue voters, hand wave/ignore the rest

My parent voted for RFK Jr :/

My mother in law was going to vote for him, she's otherwise reasonable and intelligent. Her low media literacy coupled with addiction to social media convinced her that was the best choice. She knew nothing about snake oil or heroin or lack of belief in germ theory. The guy said he'd put her grandson in a camp and she didn't know about that either. If I hadn't been there to explain she would have happily voted because Kennedy means good. There are millions not as lucky and voted exactly like that, or voted for Trump when Kennedy joined him.

Yes, someone was so sure fraud is easy with various voter registration methods, those two guys got busted for it too lol. If there was a legit issue a lawsuit would have been won by now to change it, but decades later the truth prevails. They believe it so much, but won't try to bring a case themselves. All talk no action.
