Because our society is so deeply flawed that it literally causes mental illness. And when someone is able to actually get mental health treatment, it's a big fucking deal. Also our parents have spent our whole lives telling us therapy is for the weak as we watched them destroy the world and our economy.
Also, therapy is inadequately covered by most health insurance plans, along with dental and vision. I wonder why people think that you can have "comprehensive" health insurance that neglects your teeth, eyes, or brain.
And while I can get separate health insurance for vision or dental, I've never seen any employer offer a separate mental health insurance program.
It's just so insanely expensive there's no way for an insurer to offer it without exorbitant premiums. My brother makes $160K and spends one-fourth of that (before taxes) on therapy for himself, his wife and their two kids. $200/hour sessions once a week add up pretty damn fast. I'm a school bus driver and if I went to a therapist it would cost me literally half of my income just for myself. My employer-provided health insurance covers something like two sessions a year.
This makes me really glad there is a nonprofit in this town that offers therapy for kids at a low price because it has been so helpful for my daughter and she really loves her therapist.
