Starting Sept. 7, the new R2 Marine-Willingdon RapidBus will extend from Phibbs Exchange to Metrotown Station via Hastings Street and Willingdon Avenue. This creates a one-seat ride between Park Royal and Metrotown, improving access to jobs, schools, shopping centres, and other major destinations along the corridor. One of the busiest transit corridors in the region, the existing R2 RapidBus carries more than 1.9 million boardings each year.

[...] the R2 connects customers to a corridor that provides access to approximately 98,000 jobs, and access to major destinations and connections across the region, including:

  • Park Royal
  • Capilano Mall
  • Lonsdale Quay and Lower Lonsdale
  • Burnaby Heights
  • Brentwood Town Centre Station (Millennium Line)
  • BCIT
  • Metrotown Station (Expo Line)

The Ironworkers bridge will be a big bottleneck. Here's a snippet from their FAQ about this:

https://www.translink.ca/plans-and-projects/projects/bus-projects/r2-marine-willingdon-rapidbus

What happens during heavy traffic on the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge?

During heavy traffic, accessing the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, R2 buses may take an alternate route to bypass congestion near the Cassiar Connector. All R2 stops will continue to be served. This is a routine approach already used by other bus routes in the area, including the 28, 130, and 222.

I made a mistake. USA alcohol had a Canadian import tariff of 25% between March 4, 2025 until August 31, 2025. I guess with the Provincial alcohol bans the feds removed it to avoid retaliation from the USA against our alcohol.

The USA has now put a tariff on Canadian alcohol on Aug 22, 2026 of 50% so as a result Saskatchewan will introduce a provincial 50% tax on USA alcohol starting Sep 8, 2026:

Alberta's flirtation with separation is having an impact outside of their province. The BC Provincial Conservative party is imploding with multiple MLAs leaving the party.

The exodus of legislators from British Columbia’s Opposition Conservatives now has an Alberta connection.

Donegal Wilson and Scott McInnis quit the B.C. Conservative caucus on Wednesday, both citing leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay’s reported connections to Alberta separatists as part of their concerns about her leadership.

Blaming Canada is all they can do as they can't blame themselves or their dear leader Trump:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/gop-republicans-canada-tariffs-trump-9.7329848

Texas Republican August Pfluger praised Trump for bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. and pinned blame for the trade war on Ottawa.

“It’s a war that is perpetuated by Canada,” Pfluger told CBC News. “The Canadians need to get reasonable. They’ve taken advantage of the United States for a long time.”

This trade war against Canada was started by the USA when they unilaterally violated the existing signed CUSMA deal (agreed to during the Trump 1.0 administration) by imposing tariffs on our steel and aluminum. Canada responded in various ways including most provinces banning the sale of their alcohol. Complying with the existing agreement is not “taking advantage of the USA”. The trade deficit in goods in Canada's favour is mostly due to us selling them crude oil at a discount. Almost 4 million barrels a day. Who's taking advantage of who?

The USA escalated again on August 22 so there will be “dollar for dollar” increases in our tariffs for their products coming up on September 8:

https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/programs/international-trade-finance-policy/canadas-response-us-tariffs/complete-list-us-products-subject-to-counter-tariffs.html

As a result of the U.S.'s decision to impose a 50 per cent tariff on $27.6 billion of Canadian goods effective August 22, 2026, the Prime Minister announced that Canada will match the incoming U.S. Section 338 tariffs – dollar for dollar.

These new countermeasures on $27.6 billion in products imported from the U.S. will be effective as of 12:01 a.m., September 8, 2026.

The new targeted counter tariffs are concentrated in sectors such as steel and aluminum, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics, and electronics. In certain sectors, such as steel and aluminum, existing counter-tariffs will increase from 25 per cent to 50 per cent to match U.S. rates.

Other existing counter-tariffs, including against U.S. autos, will also continue to apply.

Canada's counter-tariffs are targeted against red/purple states such as carpet manufactured in the state of Georgia. Canada's economy is smaller than the USA but there will still be negative impacts felt by the USA with higher prices for imported goods and less demand for their exports. Not good for the ruling party leading into their November mid-term elections.

USA alcohol is still available in Saskatchewan and they report a 40% decline in sales by volume:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/sask-american-liquor-sales-down-2026-9.7306544

There will be a larger decline soon as they will be imposing a provincial 50% tax on USA alcohol starting Sept. 8:

https://www.ctvnews.ca/saskatoon/article/saskatchewan-premier-announces-50-tariff-on-american-liquor/

[-] SomethingWentWrong@lemmy.ca 31 points 2 days ago

They're desperate to search for anyone else other than themselves to blame for the worsening affordability with their upcoming mid-term elections. Republicans can't say anything negative about their great leader Trump.

Texas Republican August Pfluger praised Trump for bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. and pinned blame for the trade war on Ottawa.

"It's a war that is perpetuated by Canada," Pfluger told CBC News. "The Canadians need to get reasonable. They've taken advantage of the United States for a long time."

We have an existing signed CUSMA deal that America unilaterally broke by imposing tariffs on our steel and aluminum. Canada responded in various ways including most provinces banning the sale of their alcohol. Complying with the existing agreement is not "taking advantage of the USA".

The USA escalated again on Aug 21 so there will be "dollar for dollar" increases in our tariffs for their products coming up on Sep 8.

[-] SomethingWentWrong@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

Unpopular opinion but that would be disproportionate escalation.

Alberta sends crude oil south and then refined gasoline, jet fuel is sent north. We have a mutual dependency on each other. Causing too much pain for them or ourselves will not be good. A fuel crisis could be an excuse for Trump to declare a National Emergency with justification for even more escalation.

The rules of a trade war are to match their import tariffs with our import tariffs. Canada is targeting our counter tariffs at USA products mainly coming from purple/red states:

https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/news/2026/08/list-of-products-from-the-united-states-subject-to-counter-tariffs-effective-september-8-2026.html

So if the first Epstein Files Transparency act is not being followed how will creating a second one help? What is the penalty for Trump administration officials in not following the original act? What will it be for version 2.0?

[-] SomethingWentWrong@lemmy.ca 15 points 3 days ago

There's a reason the Trump administration only focuses on the goods trade deficit. Canada imports more in services from the USA than is exported to them. Although combined goods and services Canada still exports more than it imports from the USA:

https://usafacts.org/answers/what-is-the-value-of-us-trade/countries/canada/

In any case having a trade deficit does not mean that Canada is "ripping off the USA".

Rather telling the RNC did not provide a reason for revoking the CBC's accreditation. Presumably the RNC doesn't like CBC's journalistic standards about the use of the term terrorism but we're just guessing.

But wait! There's more! Another more recent "truth" posting today:

https://trumpstruth.org/statuses/41405

For many years, the USA has been losing more than 60 Billion Dollars a year with Canada. Why??? Our long ago stolen businesses are now coming back to America in order to avoid paying tariffs. They are lining up, just like the rest of the World!!! President DJT

He seriously thinks a trade deficit with Canada means Canada is ripping off the USA.

Make it make sense.

Trump seems to be still angry with nasty Canada. Renaming Lake Ontario wasn't enough for him.

Let all Canadian Companies that are doing business with America move to the United States, immediately. Many of them are Companies that moved out years ago due to stupid U.S. Leadership. When you move back, there are no TARIFFS! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Here's the transcript from Mark Carney's Saturday morning Aug 22 news conference:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/carney-full-remarks-us-trade-talks-suspended-9.7317033

There's a lot of details in it. I'll copy/paste what I think are the highlights:

For over a year, Canada has worked intensively and in good faith with the United States to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal.

We have been under no illusions. [...] We recognized that sometimes its signature was written in pencil.

Over the past year, the U.S. has imposed a series of tariffs that violate its commitments under our agreement with them and Mexico, so-called CUSMA. The United States has continually changed their rationale for these actions, from fentanyl to taxes on U.S. tech giants, to certification of U.S. aircraft, to the sharing of tolls of a bridge that Canada built and paid for, to our dairy policy, to provincial decisions to not sell American alcohol during a trade war, to a television advertisement that quoted Ronald Reagan, to smoke from wildfires while they threatened our communities.

Canada is also the largest customer for 26 U.S. states, and a top three customer for 45 U.S. states. Last year, Americans sold almost $600 billion in goods and services to Canadians - that's more than $1.6 billion every single day. Canadian exports to the U.S. lower the costs for American families. In contrast, tariffs are taxes, taxes which are ultimately paid by US consumers.

And while we believed, earlier this week, that we were moving towards a mutually beneficial agreement, in recent days, the United States proposed new terms that were uneconomic, unfair, and undermined the net benefits to Canada, and called into question the reliability of any deal. In short, they asked too much and they offered too little.

Building at home and diversifying trade abroad is not our Plan B. It has been our Plan A from the start. Canada will continue to pursue this path to build Canada Strong, because it's right and it's working.

Canada is now the best-connected economy in the world. Over the last year we have signed more than 20 trade and security deals across five continents. We completed our most recent deal, with the UAE, in a record 47 days. Canadian businesses now enjoy tariff-free access to 1.5 billion consumers. Over the next six months, we will double that number through new trade deals from ASEAN, to India.

Last spring, I warned that America is trying to break us so they can own us. And I promised that that will never, ever happen. We are keeping that promise. Canada is becoming stronger and less dependent on America. We are already giving ourselves more than they can take away. And we are just getting started.

With the resignation of incumbent Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson there is a by-election coming up on Aug 31 for the North Vancouver - Capilano riding.

I live nearby and want to share what I am seeing.

I am getting a lot of targeted online ads from the Conservative candidate about sending Ottawa a message after 11 years of un-affordability. No mention of Pierre Pollieve in their ads or signage.

I haven't seen any online ads from the other parties.

The signage for the Liberal candidate includes a picture of PM Mark Carney literally standing behind the candidate along with the slogan "Canada Strong".

The NDP candidate's sign mentions Avi Lewis as the NDP leader with no slogan.

Neither the Green or People's parties signs have any slogan or mention of their parties leaders.

The polling at https://338canada.com/59022e.htm says as of Aug 16 the Liberals are projected to get 61% +/- 8% of the vote with a 99% chance of retaining this riding. I'm not so sure about that as I see many more conservative lawn signs on private homes around the riding so I think it may be closer than projected.

Details about previous votes for this riding are at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Vancouver%E2%80%94Capilano_(federal_electoral_district)

We'll see in a few days.

This has been @SomethingWentWrong reporting from North Vancouver.

I am digging into what instances are/aren't blocked across lemmy servers while looking into an issue on lemmy.ca and learned about https://gui.fediseer.com/ . For more context see https://lemmy.ca/post/69461640

I can see that SJW reliably censures instances that they block except for the following exceptions.

chapo.chat
cum.salon
feddit.rocks
hexbear.net
lemmy.byrdcrouse.com
sfw.community

Bringing this to your attention as a low priority request to review whether to censure the instance or possibly unblock it, whichever makes most sense.

FWIW I'll put in a comment the shell script commands I used to identify the mismatches between SJW's blocked and censured instances.

lemmit.online is currently allowed on sh.itjust.works but blocked on lemmy.ca so I looked into it a bit deeper and found there are other differences between the list of sitewide blocked instances for each server.

I'm bringing this to your attention as a low priority background task request to review the differences and see whether the instance in question should be blocked on both sites or allowed for each since they are both fedecan sites.

Here are some stats about the blocked instances:

  • 90 instances are blocked on lemmy.ca
  • 100 instances are blocked on sh.itjust.works
  • 29 blocked instances are common between lemmy.ca and sh.itjust.works
  • 61 instances are blocked only for lemmy.ca but not on sh.itjust.works
  • 71 instances are blocked only for sh.itjust.works but not on lemmy.ca

I'll post in some comments to this post the list of instances blocked on only one of the two fedecan owned lemmy servers and the shell commands I used to gather the data.

lemmit.online is a controversial lemmy server since its sole purpose is to run a bot that mirrors reddit posts to lemmy. Previous discussion 3 years ago about whether to block it: https://lemmy.ca/post/1380644

Currently it is blocked from lemmy.ca and I would like to unblock it to ease weaning off reddit gradually. If I can use lemmy.ca as my main site with links off to reddit on occassion I don't need to use reddit anymore to browse but just drop in for a specific post of interest.

The main complaint is it can fill up the all category with high volume of low interaction posts. This can be dealt with on a per user basis by blocking either the lemmit.online instance or blocking the bot@lemmit.online user.

Looking at the top 10 lemmy instances on https://fedidb.com/software/lemmy here's who allows or blocks the lemmit.online instance:

lemmy.world ✅
lemmy.ml ✅
sh.itjust.works ✅
lemmy.dbzer0.com ✅
lemmy.ca ❌
programming.dev ✅
lemmy.zip ✅
lemmy.blahaj.zone ❓
ttrpg.network ✅
lemmy.one ✅

From a lemmy user perspective I find the Linked Instances and Blocked Instances lists to be annoying to view when there are large numbers of instances. Could these be sorted in alphabetical order?

Also for the Blocked Instances can a short comment field be added so that when a lemmy admin blocks an instance from their site they can enter a reason why it is being blocked which can be shown to users?
