Hi, all.

We've grown considerably since rebuilding the sub (see https://lemmy.ml/post/2262830). Active monthly users 150 -> 380. 3.5k -> 5.42k subs. It seems to be growing organically now, and the higher we go, the more people will stumble across it. There is always a need to get away from Google, and hopefully our community can help people with this.

If you'd like to join us to help moderate so we have folk in place as we need them, that would be awesome.

If you are interested. Please send a message about why you think you'd be good for the role, and also an example post/comment in this community previously.

Thanks,

CrypticCoffee

Here I will pin a list of recommendations for software. Getting started can be daunting, and it'd be great to pull that information together here for newcomers so they can take practical steps to degoogle their lives.

Disclaimer: These are recommendations by regulars here and on privacy forums. Use at own risk. We cannot due diligence on these, so if people do have issue with items in the list, please create a post and raise your concerns.

Recommendations

  • Firefox (Strongly recommend in light of WEI and Google's plan that could potentially restrict access to websites)
  • Librewolf

Search

  • Duck Duck Go
  • Brave

Email

  • Proton mail
  • Tutanota

Cloud storage

  • Proton mail

Productivity Suite (Alternative to google docs)

Discussion

These items are ones either recommended multiple times or seem to have some form of consensus on them being good and privacy focussed. I will link discussion topics so people can see the logic and reasoning behind recommendation. If you are not happy with anything here, please discuss here: https://lemmy.ml/post/2262409

If you would like another item in this, please create a post discussion and we can pull it in and link to it.

Second page in Personal profile:

Work profile (for "dirty" apps)

https://removed/2qw1m4R5

Personal profile: Mostly FOSS apps.

Work profile: Sandboxed apps that depend on microG / Google and track a lot.

As a new user of a custom ROM, I'm still customizing my user interface and settings. I'm also trying to remove bloatware apps that I don't need.

(this isnt a question about how to make invidious more secure/private i just want google to stop knowing everything i do and every device i have) I like watching youtube videos. I hate google. I try invidious. It's pretty cool.

I watch the videos I like on it. But I get suspicous. The channels I wacth even after I change my Ip, clear my cookies, change my tor circuts, even change my entire os to something real private like tails or qubes with whonix , ARE STILL RECOMMENDED TO ME. So I do a test. I watch channels I don't like. There it is. I feel like google is laughing in my face

Whats worse, I went on a different device and the same videos are there :(.

ive tried vpns, tor, tails, whonix in qubes, quad9, and nothing works. what do i do now?

(im not concerned about youtube synching reccomendations im concerned about google knowing what i like, and what devices i have no matter what tools i use)

I think that if we want to be free from google and apple duopoly on mobile we need to embrace linux phones. It is the only solution. Google is trying to close the golden cage slowly and we need to escape on other operating system also on mobile. We re only delay a problem. We need phone preinstalled with linux for mass adoption. We need more apps for linux phones and more userbase.

🗺️ While visiting Pride Berlin, I learned how utterly pointless Google Maps Reviews in Germany are.

⭐ Any place can simply report negative reviews for defamation or claim the person was never there and have it removed.

Users can then appeal & risk a lawsuit.

When a review is removed the removed count on Google Maps goes up (🖼️ 1)

However that count is reset after 365 days and also only goes to 250! (🖼️ 2)

Therefore companies can simply mass report negative reviews to improve their rating.

https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/16997273

So many vulnerable people are relying on Google Maps reviews & ratings to tell them where it is save to go.

Some places have only 1000-2000 reviews but >250 reviews removed in the past 365 days!

Like how bad must the situation there be?!

Absolute shame.

I make regular use of both Google Maps' Timeline feature and Google Maps Location Sharing feature.

Timeline lets me review where I've been, which is useful for tracking when I left for work and when I return in order to log my hours after the fact. Location sharing lets me see where my partner is, and when they're on their way home or to meet me somewhere. Can folks recommend alternatives to both of these? They don't need to be one single system or app.

It's called Gbox (Google Box) and basically it lets you run apps that relies on GMS inside a profile similar to work profiles, except that it's more optimized, cleaner and easier to use. While running MicroG is privately the best option I think that if you can't install a custom rom or don't want to root my phone then this is IMO the best way to run google play apps. The only downside is that the app is not FOSS but you can turn off Internet access and use the app normally

I want to switch my phone OS over to GrapheneOS, however the one app that has been giving me issue is Duo Mobile, which my work mandates.

I havent seen a lot of posts talking about it as of late, with posts from 2024 saying they work just fine from Aurora/APK. Im still very concerned about the google play integrity attestation though, and from what ive heard the sandbox can only perform a very basic attestation.

I dont know if anything about Duo has changed in the past year, so I would like to ask if anyone has duo on their graphene and what their experience looks like so far!

i posted this on reddit before but i wanted to get your opinion on this

i use my familys google drive/photo thing (i cant really change) and i obviously want us to switch, but my mom (who take care of this whole thing) says that she likes the ecosystem that google has. Like she uses her calendar and stuff. The closest ive found is proton, which is fine, but it doesnt really have the best rep. Any alternatives?

BTW: im not gonna self-host since im not comfortable hosting such a big thing like this

I’m not a programmer so excuse my poor terminology. I have some scripts set up in google apps script for communicating with a couple apps/programs (to-do lists, health data syncs to update local spreadsheet). I’d like to move these off of google but am not sure where to start. Are there paid services that offer a similar experience for writing little programs to route my data around?

Is there any good alternative to google reviews? I've been using lib.reviews but it seems kind of dead.

Does anyone have any recommendations for tools to mass export all emails and attachments from gmail while keeping the folder structure?

I see there is a ImportExportTools NG plugin had anyone used that?

FOSS Video Editors (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

Are there any FOSS video editors out there you guys would recommend?

I'm currently using the Fossify Gallery but this doesn't have a built in video editor to simply change the rotation or shorten the video. It can be something really bare bones too.

Email, docs, music, maps etc have reasonable alternatives and you don't depend on others to switch (a gmail user will receive my email from tuta). But with WhatsApp either you conceal and use it or you just don't talk to people (tried convincing them to switch to signal and it simply doesn't happen)

How do you deal with it?

I'll go straight to the point, so many phones (aside from pixel and other minor brands) offer 2 app stores, Google Play Store and another store by the vendor(Samsung has the Galaxy Store, for Huwaei its the Gallery App Store, and for Amazon its the Amazon App store...) And these apps don't rely on the Google Play Services neither do the apps they offer

I own a Xiaomi Redmi and I've only tested it with some games that refused to run without the Google Play Store and it works!

This only requires you to not have a Pixel phone though, which is kinda ironic tbh

I have not tried it with banking apps although I doubt it'd work

Idk what's crazier between finding a safe way to install GPS required apps or finding a utility to those bloatware

As title, I'm using Thunderbird (k9) on android, searched on f-droid too, nothing....is it really that difficult?

Rooting seems to have some benefits like bypassing API integrity, so I want to know if rooting my phone is a good idea? And is it safe? (By that I mean will I break my device?) I don't use Google Play Services nor any banking apps (I use the website) and there's no supported custom ROM for my phone (Xiaomi redmi note 12 S) so I think it might be a solution
