You seem to have almost everything under control and already planned. For the VPN I'd suggest Tailscale since it's the easiest VPN to set up (if you don't have a public IP). You can do a lot of things with it, but if you only want the basics, then there's not much reading to do. Some people recommend ZeroTier, but I havent tried it, tbh.
BTW, I would keep in mind that Tailscale is planning to go IPO (if you care about that):
I don't usually participate in communities of my interest, like vegan, communist, anarchist, etc. because I know I don't agree a 100% and that there will always be people that think are better than others or that have a lot more time to spend on activism than me. But all my friends know I never back down when discussing important topics with anyone, I always tell them that I will take the time to discuss with people they don't like, like weird conservatives and other uncomfortable groups (which have a big presence where I study).
I usually can recognize when someone is close to being more left-leaning than what they think they are, and I take the time to talk to them about it, which a lot of leftist communities don't (at least from what I've seen). Yes, there are trolls, but usually when talking in person, they aren't that stupid.
Same here in México, a lot of people think their dual core Intel from 2011 (and even older than that) is still worth more than +$100USD. Even worse, companies usually want to resell devices to recover some of the cost, so even that option is kind of expensive. I'm waiting for some friends that can buy company devices for cheap so they can resell them to me for cheap too lol
I'm studying cybersecurity and there are barely any women, but our directors are always encouraging them to participate and speak more. I'm friends with some of them and they hardly encounter anyone hostile. There are some men that speak behind their backs, but I'm glad a lot of people defend them and are open about their stance against sexism and misogyny. It'd always funny when anyone says something sexist and everyone around responds making fun of them or just ignoring them and leaving them alone on their comments.
Of course, it's not perfect, but I'm glad that it's getting better. Also, women were the whole top 3 or 5 of all students in our faculty lol

This has happened in México too, the most famously recorded one was during Enrique Peña Nieto's term (sorry for linking to YT). They said the flag thing was an accident, but it was during the Flag Day and everyone was angry with the way the government was handling things. The government-influenced media was angry with the military because "they made a mistake", but we all knew why it happened.
I ended up liking it a lot. I don't know why or how, but it (as Flatpak) uses less RAM and CPU than native (RPM) Firefox, so I've been enjoying testing it as daily driver for basic navigation. I still use Firefox as my main browser, but Zen works fine, has good proposals and is still improving and hearing the community. Well done and well deserved

If you do or know someone that will do, please take into consideration that the housing market in México, right now, has been favoring foreigners and that in some areas, they've displaced the locals and raised prices so much that they can't afford to be there anymore (be for shopping, working, etc.). Please don't contribute to this and research before, do not try to pay in euros/dollars, come legally and work legally.
I've been looking into continuing or updating old programs that don't have maintainers in the FSF/GNU list, but the mailing lists and archaic webpages don't help much.
I'm still learning, but I'm tired of not seeing enough good FOSS alternatives or only discontinued ones.
I don't know if muPDF Viewer is, technically, free software, but i use it for the completely minimal UI. You can only read and search, it's very limited in a good way.
