When I go to refresh a page or go to the home page, I sometimes get a blank page, and it will not change, even if I click on another link. I am forced to reopen a new tab and go to the website again.

I know the subject has come up before, just wanted to add another reason to the pile. Their instance has been setting its users' post timestamps 15 minutes into the future so they'll be parked at the top of the "New" sort order for longer.

Let's preface with the fact that I'm a tech idiot, so please bear with me if I don't immediatly understand something or need an ELI5 ^^°

Why I'm asking: I moderate some communities that are basically dead. I tried to kickstart them years ago by posting tons of images, guides and other content that I'd originally posted on reddit and had since taken down before I nuked my account there, but I've run out of things to post on Lemmy long ago and submissions from regular users are scarce.

However, I also have a youtube channel with hundreds of videos that might give a little bit of life back to those communities if I started posting them here.

I just don't know whether this is actually a good idea, or if it might be a far too big strain on the servers for too little payoff. I'd like to breathe back life into the communities but NOT at the cost of indirectly hurting the Fediverse in any way.

...and I don't really want to just post links to those videos either, as I would prefer to NOT redirect users to a different site. The main goal is to get people to enjoy spending time here, after all.

The reason I am asking is because the admins don't remove spam and the version they are using is old.

Which make me ask, why even open an instance on the Fediverse if you are not going to keep it updated and spam free?

Over the long-term this has the potential to harm the Fediverse and take money out of the other Piefed instance admins that keep their instances updated and spam free.

Every now and then something will go through, but about 90% of the time it just throws up an error message. What's going on?

A few months ago, I joined the lemmy platform and made my account here on lemmy.world. One of the first things I searched for was a community of my hometown, Bern. I was happy to find one and subscribed successfully (seemingly) : https://lemmy.world/c/bern@feddit.ch

Soon I noticed that not much is going on there and I tried to activate life there by making a few posts. I got a few votes, but no comments. This didn't trouble me too much; I just thought that there were just very few users in this community and that those were very passive. I kept on making posts of which I hoped that they could be motivating people to get into active communication, or to subscribe, if some non-member found this community.

Today I tried to subscribe to this community from piefed.social. I wanted to demonstrate a friend the interoperability of the two services lemmy and piefed. I couldn't find the Bern community, though.

Then I realized that the whole instance of the Bern community (feddit.ch) had been shut over 2 years ago! I tried to dig deeper into this, and finally found this post announcing the shutdown of the instance : https://lemmy.world/post/12995344https://lemmy.world/post/12995344

So my question is: is this community still alive and real? Or is it some zombie copy that I posted into, but it doesn't really live or it's not really visible or accessible to users on other instances, or maybe even on this instance? If so, shouldn't it be eliminated somehow?

I'm writing a bot. I just created a Backrooms community (!backrooms@lemmy.world) and I want a bot to post links (as the user @backroomsbot@lemmy.world) to Backrooms-related content from the Backrooms wikis on a regular basis. (My current thought is daily, but I could be persuaded otherwise.) I might also add other features in the future like checking Kane Pixels' YouTube channel and automatically posting links to his new videos, but that's probably a later (if ever) kind of feature. I don't have any specific plans to add any kind of automod or mod tools capabilities at this point. (In fact, I don't have plans to make the bot account a mod in the community.) But I guess there might be a future when that happens.

I've read the Bot Usage and Guidelines section of the TOS and I've read this thread. It's all straightforward and I'm following all the rules and guidelines. My plan is not to put it on a cron for a while. I'll just run it manually every day for a while (until it proves itself) so that I can inspect what it does and if it misbehaves (not that I expect it to, but out of an abundance of caution) fix issues quickly to not impact users on Lemmy. I have also tested it on a locally-running Lemmy instance to ferret out any bugs or bad behaviors. It doesn't accept any commands from other users (well, except command-line arguments from me when I run it on my computer from a Bash prompt, but it doesn't take any actions in response to being @'d or DMed or anything). It DMs my user account when it encounters an error. I've been a professional software engineer for decades, so I like to think I know a little bit about what I'm doing. (Not that that means I'm incapable of producing bugs, but yeah.) And I cannot express in strong enough terms how cold and dead I will be in the ground before I put even a single solitary god-damned line of GenAI-generated code in any coding project I write. This is not some vibe-coded monstrosity. I wrought every single line using my brain, Go documentation, and Vim as God intended.

Oh, and I'll publish my bot's code on Codeberg or something under AGPL one of these days once it has demonstrated real-world success at doing what it does for a while.

All that to justify my use of "friendly" in the title of this post. Heh.

Anyway! To my question. My bot is being blocked by Cloudflare's CAPTCHA verification. You know, the thing specifically intended to repel bot traffic. Bots do seem to be explicitly allowed by .world's rules, so long as they follow all the rules. And I've definitely seen other bot accounts successfully posting. So my guess is that there's some good way to get my bot posting properly without being intercepted by Cloudflare. All that said, my searching hasn't revealed anything specific about how exactly that could be made to work. I'm hoping someone here can give me a lead or two, or just tell me why I'm wrong-headed about some basic assumption I'm making.

Hello! I was testing community ownership transfer via API and encountered an issue.

This account was previously the owner of the community https://lemmy.world/c/summittestcommunity. I transferred ownership of this community to my other test account @idunnololz_test@lemmy.ca.

What I didn't expect is that the transfer went through on lemmy.world end but it did not seem to go through on the lemmy.ca end. So now lemmy.world thinks the community is owned by @idunnololz_test@lemmy.ca and lemmy.ca thinks the community is owned by @idunnololz@lemmy.world.

Neither account can change ownership of the community.

It's been about 4 hours since I made this change so it seems unlikely this is just a delay.

If someone could help me transfer ownership back to my account that would be appreciated. Thank you!

Reddit has a feature where you can hide a post on upvote or downvote to ensure that youre always seeing content that you never saw before. Does lemmy have that feature?

I commented on a post a few days ago where a few of us lemmings were speculating as to the nature of a QoL bug that was affecting us.

I went to revisit the comment as I discovered another instance of the bug, but I got a "server error" when I tried to return. As it's still visible from my profile, I don't think the comment was removed.

I tried the link for the post itself and I got the same error.

I went to find the post in the community's feed via title and date and I don't see it.

I see easy links to check my comment for both my moderation history as well as that comment's moderation history, but the post itself remains a mystery to me.

I suspect there's a way to sift through a community's entire moderation history to poke around for that post, but I can't find it, plus for a bigger community it must be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Any way to do this, preferably easily?

Hello. I've found that rather suddenly, all of my comments within the past week have exactly 3 downvotes. These are even on totally unassuming comments, like a comment I posted saying that French is used in a lot of African countries.

I believe it might be possible that I am suddenly being harassed be a user with multiple accounts or something.

I've had constant issues with people on Lemmy being casually racist. Down voting attempts to ask others to rethink using slurs that harm people, being called thin skinned for having issues with racist content.

There's a lot of that in this thread.

However after posting a thread to "A Boring Dystopia" and attempting to do more than simply calling for the deaths of anyone who joins ICE and explain the reasoning for that, I saw a blatantly racist post and called it out.

The result was /u/givesomefucks banning me permanently for the community, while doing and saying nothing about the racist post. For the crime of calling out racism, I was banned for... racism. And "slap fights" for logically trying to understand an issue and trying to avoid insulting others.

Lemmy has somehow evolved into an echo chamber so unwelcoming of any words that don't match the scripted seminar so many people here seem to be quoting from that it pushes away liberal leftist educated black people.

So many people here seem to be simply looking for others they can call out as bigots or nazis or evil that they do it without thought to people who actually support all the same things that they do. It's unhealthy and exhausting.

I don't have the time or energy to spend on a place that actively seems to support casual racism while simultaneously trying to call people bigots for understanding the importance of tolerance in society.

Feel free to down vote. Make sure to switch to your alts. That's what sane, rational people do when they encounter words and thoughts they don't like.
