Every time I hear about this my first thought is immediately to look in the Criminal Code, only to always be disappointed that this is not legally considered treason.

One of the main benefits of Linux is that it has very proven security. The Linux kernel is possibly the most looked-at and audited code project in history. So any security issues are quickly spotted and patched. Any forks of Linux wouldn't inherit the swarm of security auditors attached to it. In addition to that, LLMs generate a voluminous amount of code, which is mostly impossible to audit for security anyway.

There is great promise in AI-driven security testing, but in terms of pure volume of eyes and brains working on it, you cannot really compete against Linux.

Organisations know that when they use the Linux kernel, they are using a project that has an excellent reputation for reliability and security.

Do they sell it at Walmart??

Your first link is temporarily not working, but you're arguing against the wrong point anyway. I accept everything you said to be true. Not depleting the battery below 20% is not because low states of charge are bad for the battery. You have already made a convincing argument that they are not. It is to keep the depth of discharge lower, which is known to be good for battery longevity, though I currently don't have a primary source for that right now because I'm not on my computer. You could get the same benefits by charging from 10% to 70% or 0% to 60%, and in those cases that might actually be better for the battery, but people like having a buffer rather than pulling up to the charger running on sparks, so that's why 20% is the recommendation.

Fox News has an obvious and pronounced conservative slant, but it is still mostly based in reality, except for programmes like the Sean Hannity show (if that is still going) and whatever crap their commentators say. Fox News is still going to call a duck a duck, or at least a waterfowl, and this sometimes garners criticism from the truth-challenged.

Newsmax and OANN are the actual loonies.

They should really lean into this by making a Wizard of Oz-themed television advertisement.

What the fuck is a macos? Is it a Nintendo or one of those AI things?

Are you buying the tyres from Rivian or do you buy them from a third-party? My electric car (Chevrolet Bolt) came with regular Michelin tyres and I could replace them with whatever brand I want by taking it down to the local tyre shop.

If you're currently buying "dealer recommended" tyres, those are of course likely to be overpriced but could probably be replaced with more economical tyres that are still suitable for purpose if you asked a local tyre shop.

But I would be shocked if, comparing apples for apples, an electric pickup truck is heavy enough to run through tyres so much quicker than a regular pickup truck that the increased tyre cost would offset the cost of oil changes.

I am so glad I learned about the existence of Shell from this meme. I did not know that Shell existed prior this. This will absolutely change my habit of just buying fuel from whatever filling station is closest or cheapest.

I'm shocked that they are still doing these types of things. I expected the bank's executives would've been able to settle their differences with Treasury officials over a glass of wine and a few million donated to the Don's campaign fund.

The environmental impact of AI would be a tenth of what it is now if people just ran whatever models they want on their own local machines. We're mortgaging the next fifty years worth of compute power and meanwhile mfs who talk to virtual girlfriends on their $2,000 gaming PC have trillions of FLOPS of compute power sitting right next to them.

Right, because this is definitely a flattering meme to Shell and would absolutely encourage people to buy their product.

Oman's territorial waters on the southern side of the Strait of Hormuz is also rendered impassable due to Iranian threats. Since Oman is not a party to this conflict, are they just okay with Iran declaring the entire strait closed and threatening to shell ships passing even through Omani territorial waters?

There's been endless complaining on the world stage from the United States about the strait being closed, but I haven't seen anything from Omani officials yet.

For fellow Americans living in cities where ICE is active, many people, especially those of Hispanic descent, are already carrying around passports on their persons at all times because they're rightfully afraid of being forcibly disappeared or deported to some random South American country.

A passport card can be obtained for $30 from the Department of State. It is considered exactly equivalent to a passport within the US, but it's the size of a credit card. It is a valid travel document for land and sea travel within North America and the Caribbean. It also counts as a Real ID. The card is good for ten years.

Do not do this if you are transgender or have an X gender marker. They will cancel your passport and tell you to apply for a new one with your sex assigned at birth.

(Washington Post gift article)

Selected quotations:

Many Western democracies lining up to recognize a Palestinian state are in the process of conferring legitimacy on something that, legally speaking, doesn’t yet exist. Meanwhile, an economically crucial and politically functional democratic state that Western leaders have vowed to aid in case of outside aggression — Taiwan — remains unrecognized. This kind of hypocrisy invites trouble.

Note: The context of the writer's opinion that Palestine is "unqualified" for recognition stems from the fact that their government is only partially-functional, divided, with borders nobody seems to respect, and ultimately just gets bullied around by Israelis and doesn't seem to be able to exercise sovereignty in any way other than what the Israelis allow them to. The article's author seems to understand that recognitions of Palestinian sovereignty are more to do with being lip service expressing sympathy for the Palestinian suffering perpetrated by Israel rather than real, tangible attempts to establish relationships with a functioning state that exercises sovereignty.

This year, Taiwan’s gross domestic product is set to surpass $800 billion. Freedom House scores its democracy at 94/100 — more free than Britain and nearly on par with Germany. The Economist Intelligence Unit ranks it 12th in the world for democratic governance, the highest in Asia. Taiwanese passports grant visa-free travel to almost 140 countries.

This stark contrast reflects a failure of political courage. Western democracies’ refusal to recognize Taiwan stems not from doubts over qualifications, but rather from fear of economic retaliation from China. Yet this diplomatic self-censorship undermines the very rules-based international order the West purports to defend. If and when China launches an invasion and calls it an “internal matter,” any legal and political legitimacy the West would hope to muster in opposing such a move would be hobbled.
